I've been trying this now and all the tutorials I can find aren't what I want.
Now I don't mean the silly little white boxes with drop shadows, I mean the actual Polaroid effect.
It looks slightly washed out, but I might have the terminology wrong.
I haven't been using photoshop long so I'm not sure how to achieve this effect.

This is the sort of image I mean.

Any suggestions anyone?

From what I can see, reduce saturation, increase exposure and create an overlay with a very slight blur.
