I've done all editing in RAW then, processed into a jpg. Then I added some sharpness while it was a jpg. Said, "save changes" and closed the program.

The reason I ask is that I know it will save changes within the program so next time you open DPP the adjustments are still there. But if I open another program will the changes be in the image?

I do not think it will save the changes to the raw file in a way external editors will understand. I know Nikon modifies it's raw files, but Adobe leaves everything the way it is, and appends a .xmp file where the settings are stored.

I take pictures so quickly, my highschool was "Continuous High".
