Camera Labs

Hi folks,

A quick heads up for those who prefer to spend their hard-earned cash on cameras rather than software. The latest version of GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP) has been released and it's free. Head on over to http://www.gimp.org/ for more.

I haven't tried the program but the feature list looks to be comprehensive. Check out the English User Manual.

Does anyone use this software?

GIMP has been my first graphics processing application I've ever used. I have discovered this program when I started to play with Linux back in 1996-7. I found it very capable and, with progress of time, comparable to Photoshop in terms of feature list. However, its UI is, in my opinion, horrible. Even among keen advocates of GIMP this is a common opinion. There are some attempts to make it more Photoshop look alike (see GIMPShop) but I still think that it has a fair way to go before quality of the UI becomes comparable to other, commercial packages. Also, in old days many functions that you took for granted in many other applications, like for example red eye reduction, were only available as third party plug-ins. While it was okay for some, some other people felt intimidated by having to do some unfamiliar tasks like installation of a plugin. I believe that red eye reduction is now installed "out of the box". GIMP documentation is relatively good and there are many books written on the subject, however I have not found yet a good documentation of GIMP's scripting. Perhaps there is some new doco available now, but I am firmly in Photoshop (and Lightroom) camp so I have not followed GIMP's development recently.

Thanks Bob. It’s great to have the latest version of GIMP. I don’t use it very often these days, but it’s a great free editor. I found that the download process had been made a little easier. The help files have to be downloaded separately but that went smoothly too. Like csnaus, GIMP was my first real editor and there are still things I do more easily with it. I’ll give the updated version a whirl.

I love how one can dock dialogue windows (layers, etc.) into the main app window, merging them into one.
