Hi folks,

This afternoon I had the unpleasant experience of being unable to start Adobe Bridge under Vista x64. The faulting module was "cooltype.dll".

Starting Bridge with the Ctrl and Shift keys pressed allowed me to reset the preferences but, as before, once the program Window was open and pretty much fully drawn I got the "Adobe Bridge has stopped working" message once more.

Microsoft's "Problem Reports and Solutions" suggested downloading the latest copy of Adobe Reader. That wasn't helpful as the latest update was installed this morning following a prompt by the Adobe Updater.

Whoa! Maybe the installation got corrupted so I uninstalled Reader and installed a freshly downloaded copy. Started Bridge and got, yes - you've guessed it, "Adobe Bridge has stopped working".

The solution was to do a "System Restore" to yesterday's check point which was, of course, completed prior to today's Adobe Update. 8)

Maybe this experience was just bad luck but I've created this thread just in case anyone else is equally unlucky. The nuisance is that there is a serious security issue with Reader 9.1.2, which is what I've now reverted to, but it is just possible that the 9.1.3 fix was what broke Bridge on my computer. :?

No comment on Bridge, but to confirm if it was the update, you can update again? Just make a fresh restore point before... just in case.

Alternatively, I've ditched adobe's reader long ago as it was slow to load and full of unnecessary bloat. Now I use Foxit Reader.

tomorrow, maybe.

But I think I'll do a spot of Googling first to see if anyone else has suffered the same issue.

Bob.

I downloaded a fresh copy of the latest version of Adobe Reader today and started the install after creating a new Restore Point. During the setup phase of the installer I noticed that the version being offered was 9.1.2 and not 9.1.3, the version I had downloaded yesterday.

So, while I can still find references to 9.1.3 on the Adobe web-site (example) it seems as though Adobe has pulled 9.1.3. My guess is that the problem starting Adobe Bridge was indeed down to Reader 9.1.3 so my solution for recovery in my opening post may be useful, should any other member suffer the same problem.

In an ideal world Adobe will release 9.1.4 very shortly but if they fail to increment the version number then so long as the update is downloaded from the Adobe site on or after the time of this post I would hope the new version will have the fix in place.

Bob.

Hi folks,

An update to the update: they don't call them confusers for nothing.

Anyway, I fired up Adobe Bridge on my confuser this afternoon and for the first time since the debacle outlined above changed folders. Got the "stopped working" message again and the Event Viewer confirmed that "CoolType.dll" was again the faulting executable. In the end I copied the x86 version of CoolType.dll from the Adobe PhotoShop folder across to the Adobe Bridge folder and all now appears to be well. Maybe the Adobe Reader 9.1.3 update wasn't at fault or maybe it was. I'm confused but I don't care any more.
