I've been really confused about how and why my pictures looks so different once it's posted online, so I signed up with Nikon's own photo hosting site "mypicturetown" which has the best "original" color without so much brightening nor sharpening. The slightly smaller photo on the left was uploaded to flickr, the larger one on the right

Which browser are you using? The reason I ask is that the difference may be down to the way your browser is handling, or failing to handle, colour profiles. When I look at your two images with browser based colour management turned off (my default as Firefox 3.5 is broken in that regard - see my post here) I don't see much difference apart from size. But if I temporarily enable Firefox's colour profiling then the image on the left looks a lot darker. It seems, from other member's posts, that Safari 4 suffers the same problem.

That leaves me wondering if the Flickr version isn't actually "more correct" but as a result it's also exposing the inexcusable flaws in some browsers.

UPDATE: I've just copied the two images over to my computer and opened them using IrfanView so that I could view the JPEG "compression properties". We have:

• Flickr: JPEG, IEC 61966-2.1 Default RGB colour space - sRGB
  
• Nikon: JPEG

Seems that either Nikon/mypicturetown are actually stripping information from the JPEG or Flickr are inserting information that wasn't there in the original. If you get a chance to look at the original version on your computer using IrfanView and click the "Information" icon then could you report back on what's in the "Compression" field of the resultant dialog box. You can select the text with your mouse and copy and paste.

My bet is still that the Nikon site is stripping out the JPEG colour space information as my own images direct from the Amazon server exactly as I uploaded them (example) show "JPEG, IEC 61966-2.1 Default RGB colour space - sRGB" and as a result induce the same browser error.
