I am currently using Photoshop Elements 5 for my pp work. I have Nikon gear and I wonder whether it would be worth getting Capture NX2. Have any of you tried it and been able to compare it with Elements? It does seem a bit expensive compared to the new version of Elements (Version 7). Maybe I would be better getting Elements 7 instead? What do you think? Any advice appreciated.

If you don't shoot in RAW, then it's definitely not worth it.

If you do shoot in RAW though, I would recommend trying a trial copy of NX2 first and then decide on the results.

Yea definitely try the trial first. I think it's great because it's easily the most powerful RAW converter I've used and it's an official Nikon program so it keeps your image custom settings intact. It doesn't have many big feature advantages over Elements but excels in the level of fine control that it gives you.

Thanks for the responses. I am currently using the 60 day trial but I wanted to know if anyone had compared it with the "new" Elements 7 which is a lot cheaper. I really don't want or need both.

I think NX2 works pretty great for JPEG too, it converts all files you open with it to RAW for you to edit with.

I am actually very much liking NX2, I might stick with it myself. Replace that Photoshop finally!

Converting a JPEG to RAW is not very useful since you've already lost tons of information from the in-camera JPEG conversion.

i select raw and jpeg to be saved when shooting the best of both worlds although heavy on the storage

Thanks for all the responses. I have decided I don't like the user interface on Capture NX2 and it is too expensive for what it is. I can convert raw files using Nikon View and will stick to Elements for post processing.
