Hello,

I have a Rebel Xsi and I've been working on some of the great tips here for Bokeh shooting and just enjoying and learning everything I can with this camera.

My concern is with resizing pictures to post on the web, I have some images shot in Raw that are 4272 x 2848, I have edited them with The Gimp and now I would like to post them, but not at that size. If I choose Scale Image in the gimp and resize them to a more web friendly size of 1024 x 683 will I loose any IQ? also being that I'm new, is this even the proper way to do this?

May I offer you a warm welcome to the CameraLabs forum.

Inevitably when downsizing images you lose a little impact but, as you are well aware, we have to impose a size limit for images directly displayed on forum posts. It's always possible to add a link to the full sized version, though.

My own experience is that when downsizing photos for display on the web it can be beneficial to add a little sharpening. My default image viewer is IrfanView (freeware) and, quite handily, you can set it up to always add a little sharpening if you ask it to downsize and save an image.

For more intensive work I use Photoshop and it also can apply additional sharpening when downsizing. Not sure if the GIMP has that option, though.

If the images will only be used for web display or printed at 6x4 (15x10cm) then using the small image setting might work out better.

I sometimes wish my camera had a RAW + S(mall) setting so I could use the RAW for printing and the small JPEG for web pages.

Hi Leigh,

Some image hosting websites will downsize them for you. Sites like Flickr will accept the full image but display only the smaller sizes so if you are willing to wait just a little bit longer when uploading, you may save yourself that extra step in post-processing.
