I tighten the screw on the head of the tripod as hard as it will go.

Maybe pin isn't the right word. Here's an image of what I mean. The "pin" can be seen next to the screw.



And that's a turned over white plastic cup, not part of the tripod.

Ah, and where does this "pin" fit in on the camera-body side?
And tightening did not help?

There's no whole or fit for the pin. It's on a spring, so that it will recede. As the bottom of the camera is not totally flat, it would seem its [the pin's] purpose is to cling to some recess.

The camera just slides down, when in "portrait" position, as if there is little grip between the tripod's head and the camera body.

But I fear that this is the "price" for a cheap tripod
But you can still try to increase the "grip" or friction of the mount by some "advanced materials"...

Various lenses, SB800 & Manfrotto 190 with 460MG head

I have a cheap Nikon tripod that has a plastic tip about 2mm high that is right next to the mounting screw. Seems to be what you have Luis except mine is plastic. It's got a spring underneath and can be pushed to be flush with the top of the mounting surface. It doesn't seem to do anything but make a noise as it scrapes the base of the D80 while I screw the D80 it in.

I think the 'plastic pin' is to act as a stopper for cameras that are small.
I have a Sony T-9 and when mounted on the tripod, the pin is either front or back of the Camera, to prevent err ..movement ?
