Currently have a Canon 1100D with 75mm-300mm lens.

I really like the Manfrotto series tripod and set my heart on the Manfrotto 055XPROB, just making my mind up on which type of head to use.

Im going to be shooting motorsports, wildlife and light trails at night.

Maybe I need one that pans around like the 496RC2 ball head as its good for panning around?

Any suggestions or others?

The Gimbal heads are designed for fast sports/wildlife, but are expensive.
Manfrotto 393 is a good cheaper alternative viewtopic.php?f=25&t=28468

Having said that though, you shouldn't have any problems hand-holding your lens in decent light, so maybe just buy a good ball-head for night shots.

Ok I decided to go the extra as I got some nice christmas money from family, and go for the carbon fibre versions as its going to be lot easier for me to carry around.

This is what i'm looking at now:-

Manfrotto 055CXPRO3 Carbon Fibre Tripod
Manfrotto 460MG 3D Magnesium Head

It must make sense to go for a "Magnesium Head" as i'm going for a carbon fibre tripod.
Anyone know if this particular head pans or swivels or if I can move it around at all?

Couple of things to consider. Will the max load of 3kg on the head be enough, not just now but in the future?
Also, will the tripod be tall enough for you to comfortably `get under` for eg, night time star-shots. (best not to fully extend a tripod if possible, they can be a tiny bit `wobbly`, especially the lighter ones, which will spoil any long exposures)

Just thought I update you all.

Got the Manfrotto 055CXPRO3 Tripod today, beautiful and lightweight, easy to pack away, got this with a Manfrotto 496RC2 Ball Head with Friction Control, which works really nicely, 2 knobs one to lock it in and other to make the friction different when panning my shots :)
