Post subject: 1st time Moon issues
PostPosted: Sun Nov 06, 2011 9:58 pm
Hi guys

was out in the garden tonight and noticed the moon out so thought i'd try taking some pics unsuccessfully i have to say

was just mucking around with a 70-300mm lense trying various speeds but could only seem to capture a big while blob or 2 blobs (for some reason which i though may be a reflection bouncing of the uv filter)

left the aperture open to f4 (the lowest i could get it with this lense)
zoomed into 300mm
set focus to manual and left it on infinity
tried various speeds from 1/30 to 30 secs

this pics varied from a bright white blob to a near total whiteout on the pic

kit was
Nikon D40
Tamron 70-300 1:4-5.6 tele
WB set to sunny (options for daylight was either sunny or cloudy)

and and all info or help is greatly appreciated .. can post an example if needed

The moon normally is much brighter than people think - so try shorter shutter-speeds!
I've shot these two with a 400mm plus 1.5x tele-converter at f/8.0, 1/125 sec, ISO 400:

Welcome to the forum Iain.

I was in the same boat as you not so long ago, I didn't realise just how bright the moon is.

Check out the thread at the top of this page; http://www.cameralabs.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=16378
Some great pics from the guys on here & most have the settings/data posted.
Good luck tonight (clear skies permitting  ) & don't forget to post your pics.
