For those who have not seen the news stories the next couple of days 11/12 August 2009 should be good for viewing and photographing a meteor shower.

I went to a local park that is ontop of the city to watch these last night (11th or early 12th) and it wasn't that exciting. There were a few meteors here and there but nothing that you could possibly take a picture of which is a shame because I was ready. Hope you guys have better luck than I did

I didn't try last night, and the cloud has moved in tonight Guess I missed it.

I would try doing long exposures and hoping for the best. Point a wide angle lens roughly in the right direction, "long" exposure (as long as you can afford before light pollution washes stuff out) and leave a remote release on continuous.

I can only dream about catching such events on the photos.
I remember living in Spain for a while - weather there was great for making photos (apart of vibrant hot air). There was only about 30 days with rain a year. Now I live in place where there is only 30 days a year without The Rain.
Sorry for writing out of topic but it's hard to think positively when everyone are talking about such a nice event (even google has changed its logo for today) and I have to watch The Rain outside.

I can read here on the forum about problems with choosing lens because all the focal length, aperture, distortion... I have to think - has it good sealing?
Visitors on the forum are talking about travel light tripod/monopod with good head... I have to find some 10kg one, otherwise wind will take my gear and play with it like with small pingpong ball.
Few days ago I've read here about handy backpacks, if they can carry all the gear (space for all the lens) and be secure (like flippack) or fast to use (like fastpack) or even if they are good disguise for the content (Gordon was writing about the Crumpler Bags)... And again.. I have to search for something waterproof (little more than just weatherproof).

Nevermind. I hope you all have a chance to take some photos of the sky these days and share it here.

NYC does not have any chance even if there's clear night sky...too much light pollution.

In sydney, australia here. Went out this morning, but I didn't see anything. There were a few flashes on the horizon, but they may or may not have been meteors.
