Usually 2-4GB minimum, shooting only in Jpeg - your buffer can fill with more Jpegs in continuous fire than with RAW. However recent top end cameras can handle large files quickly and so we're seeing more shots in TIFF or RAW instead. The size of the card doesn't really matter now as well. A large 8GB or 16GB card works well with a wireless transfer system where images are sent straight to another location for editorial and the need to worry about changing cards is fairly redundant.
