Me and my mate from my photography class Ian went up to Perth Skatepark on Saturday. [now yesterday, since its 4am now LOL]

Another make of mine who does photography and also inline skates was gonna come but he had work.

Rather than not go, we thought hey, the older ones, lets just ask permission, and give them the links to out flickrs. Everyone seemed cool about it.

They all got sort of excited at first, thinking we might be from the paper, or a skate mag, then they found out it was just for banter, some were a little dishearted, others will still up for it and a few helped us out quite a bit allowing us to give them a bit of direction etc.



All in all, 7-8 hours out, 2 CF cards full, 8xAA for the flash totally drained - not a bad days shooting at all!!!

Some awesome shots there. Good work fella! Perth skatepark is amazing. I've been there. It's absolutely brilliant. I particularly like shot #10 - it's quite an old school style shot, like you'd see back in the days of RAD magazine.

Thats some great work there daniel.. i really love all of them but my favorite is probably the last one with the bike.. why didnt you use your fill flash there?? that might have looked really cool if it was at the right power it could have just blended in with the surrounding ambient light.. but sometimes when you only have on chance you cant always rely on that.. (so then you go and switch to nikon with there superior flash control and metering to get the perfect lighting off your flash automatically)

Good looking boarding shots indeed! Good use of the flash even tho it was bright sunshine!

I would crop the images a bit tho, there just too much sky in them, but i think you did great!

Even before checking the EXIF, it looked like the 10-20 Sigma (I'm familiar with the distortion profile). The EXIF suggests it is, but Daniel can confirm this.

Very dynamic images and I thoroughly enjoyed viewing them all. Alex has suggested cropping, and he may be right with a few images, but I rather like having the context with the action and wouldn't like to see them cropped. There are some images that show your flash wasn't powerful enough, but sadly you can't do much about that now. What were your flash settings? The EXIF doesn't tell us that part.

emp93 - Well I ran through my 8xAA recharageables, so I'll be buying more of them very soon, probably tomorrow. My 580EXII was very reliable i'll have you know


Alex168 - Well apparently thats the style, and tbh I thought it worked well. Got 2 printed out, and they look great where you can see them bigger. The whole thing is not to have a very small depth of field, but use the light to bring the subject to the front and give it a more important status in the picture. I used the 10-20mm most of the day.

Jake - Sigma 10-20mm =)

PhotoJ - Yeah you were right =) Distortion adds a good feel to a lot of the photos, although some could have done with it being a bit toned down. Flash sometimes miss-fired, especially when the batteries were starting to die because it couldn't charge fast enough.

Thanks for the confirmation. So were you using the flash as TTL? The power of the AA batteries are important as well. I carry 2 sets of 1300mAh and 2 sets of 2100mAh. That will have a minor effect on durability.

Yeah E-TTL with compensation ranging between 0ev to +1ev, changed it as the light was changing. I was also using High Speed Sync to operate the flash at shutter speeds faster tha 1/250th of a second, allowing me to shoot at bewteen 1/800th and 1/2000th =D - This seemed to take its toll on the flash though, plus it has to work harder to gain exposure when using high speed sync.

I have 2 sets of 2100mAh NiMh, as I said, gonna buy another 2 sets today along with another charger.
