Hey
so some of you may have read, and even helped me when I was here trying to decide what dslr to buy. Well i got one, and this was my first time using it. I had a photopass at a show for a band called Reuben. Here are some photos, Id love to know what you think but please remember it was my very first time!

Hey Liam and congrats on the DSLR!!

I quite the composition of those pics. Which lens were you using? You obviously had to crank the ISO up to 1600 or there abouts. That's the annoying thing about photgraphing concerts!!!

I used the 85mm F1.4 on a sony A700.



- Exif Specific
Exposure Time = 1/8000 sec [0.000]
F Number = 7/5 [1.400]
Exposure Program = Aperture priority
ISO Speed Ratings = 800

Focal Length = 85 mm

is what i believe it was set on forthe majority.

With abit of practise though i hope to improve. Im reading alot online about technique for these conditions but I think practice is as important as anything here.

That f/1.4 aperture sure does help in these situations!! I'm thinking that maybe you could have lowered the ISO (by a bit) and then used a slower shutter speed since 1/8000 is more than quick enough to freeze this kind of action. This would mean less noise.

Thanks for linking rather than using the "img" tags as our maximum width is 1024 pixels (but 500 height and width in On Assignment). phpBB2, which powers this forum, doesn't provide for resizing. You can find third-party add-ons to do this but it seems that all of them have issues so we rely on member's self-discipline for now. Again, thanks!

Thanks for the tip! I wasnt sure what shutter speed was best, all I knew was movng target + fast shutter speed (should) = decent shot.


I will try what you suggested next time I go to a gig in afew weeks. Only problem with experimenting is that you can only photograph for 3 songs of each band, so if you spend that time playing around with settings rather than shooting you could well end up with no useable photos at all haha

but I will definatley lower the shutter speed next time.
