Some friends of mine are going to be playing in a Paintball tournament soon and wanted to be ready with a decent lens to get in there and take some good action shots with my 40D.My budget is under $1,000 if possible.Of course I'll be using the lens regularly for paintball and other sports.

Hmmm, you'll want something fast at focusing and with a bright aperture as there'll be lots of fast action. I'd consider a 50mm f1.4 or if you can stretch, maybe an f2.8 zoom at whatever focal range is most appropriate for the subjects.

And even though I'm not a fan of filters, I would DEFINITELY use a UV / skylight for protection!

every year I shoot the professional PSP World Cup in Orlando, I use two lens on do different bodies, never a good idea to change in those conditions, I have a 17-85mm f4 and a 70-200 f4-5.6 , f4 will work just fine, it did for me. but of course f2.8 would be rather nice. (make sure u use a UV filter if your in the same area as them and I suggest camera armor or a rain cover. all theses shots below was taken at 70-200.
