Summer means it's too hot for camel racing, but the animals are still taken out for early morning canters on track. I've been meaning to get this shot for years now, and luckily I had time and a group was on track at the right moment:

great shot. Did you shoot straight in as B&W or did you use PS to desaturate? im impressed with the lack of noise in the sky as im struggling to get crisp shots of bright blue skies in B&W that dont have the texture of noise issues. So any tips pls share.

Great composition in my opinion.

Thanks robbon

I use silver efex pro to convert my colour raw files. Different templates in silver efex create different effects. The effect I use for subjects in focus creates noise on backgrounds, so I brush several layers together. Have a try of the free trial as it's great software

I've go a blog where I run through some of my black and white conversions on my website:

www.philpage.zenfolio.com

It's been a little postponed recently due to a baby arriving, but I'll continue when I can

That'll be full frame - I noticed a big difference in skies when moving from a D90

Really nice shot as usual Phil! I'm heading to Dubai in October. Looks like a really good place for photography :D

Thanks - it needed a fair bit of photoshopping as there was a second rider aiming a camera phone at me and a few overhead 'street' lights to get rid of in the foreground by the rails. And the light was horrific and harsh as usual

Flat light, James - shoot RAW, for definite

Plenty to see and do, and try to get off the beaten track (4x4 dune bashing adventure, Fish Market, Spice Souk, Gold Souk, Textile Souk - photography goldmines). Camel tracks are not so easy to get to these days unless you have wheels - and I definitely don't recommend that as the driving is 'different' in this region!

Thanks for the advice Phil! I am starting to shoot RAW now so hope to do so in Dubai as well. We are going to see our friends who have lived between Dubai and England for many years. They have finally moved back there for at least two years so we are going to visit them. I think they are going to show us all the 'downtown' areas of Dubai. They also mentioned the dune bashing to visit the desert and even mentioned something about desert camping that they have done before. I'll make sure I visit all the markets. I also plan on getting all the obvious shots such as the burn khalifa and some landscape shots of the city skyline. I'm really looking forward to Dubai. It's somewhere I've wanted to visit for a few years now so will be good to finally go :D

Well presumably your friends have wheels - see if you can persuade them to take you out early (I mean sunrise) to the camel race track on Al Ain Road, just after the Rugby 7's site on the right hand side of the road - that's a little different...
