There was a lot of variety with the focal lengths but for most of the close shots, I was shooting at 300mm (my 70-300mm zoom) although the classic cars for Schumacher's 20th F1 anniversary were shot at 420mm (300mm prime w/ 1.4x extender) as were a couple of the Porsche Supercup photos. However, that's not to say you can't get up close and personal without that long a focal length - as you can see with my shot of Johnny Cecotto in the GP2 race, that was taken at just 70mm but I was fairly close to the track from exit of Eau Rouge for that shot. Whether you need a long focal length depends on how close or far you are from the track. It's been a very long time since I went to Silverstone but I'd imagine the 70-200mm f2.8 would be adequate if you're in the stands at the Luffield to Copse complex or at the end of the Hangar Straight going into Stowe though I can't see it hurting to use the 1.4x extender just for that bit more reach.

Thanks for the feedback. That's one of the many beauties of Spa, there are lots of good vantage points. Eau Rouge seemed steeper than I remembered it the last time I went to Spa or perhaps it's just that I'm not as fit as I was ten years ago.
