pond skimming: one skis, snowboards, or tubes down a steep slope in attempts to pick up as much speed as possible in order to skim across a pool at the bottom. Oh, and don't forget to keep your balance.
BYU-Idaho hosts a pond skimming event every year. Fellow students dress up in ridiculous costumes, hoping to achieve fame and glory amid the frigid temperatures. As for myself, I sit along the sidelines with my camera and capture the splashes.
In all seriousness, I was wanting to test out my new Tamron 28-75mm 2.8, which I say delivered well. I also wasn't too familiar with AI SERVO auto focusing mode, so I experimented with that.
Lessons learned:
- AI SERVO works well, depending on how fast the subject is moving. Captured every shot sharp? No. Got a few great shots though? I'm pleased with a small set (see below).
- Tamron's 28-75mm is great! ... Buuuut, I really wish I had even more reach. Hence, the Sigma 70-200mm is next on the wishlist. I even saw a student with one photographing for the University Communications. Ah, I want one. But the Tamron's constant aperture of 2.8 was very helpful so I could keep high shutter speeds and be zoomed all the way.
- Equipment get a little stiff when you out in 10 degrees (F) for over an hour -- the zoom ring didn't flow as smoothly then.
