I don't have much photography time anymore, the only time I can shoot is during my kids hockey game. Since I'm the assistant coach, I get to shoot close action shots... not much action for a 7 and 8 year old league.

My shots are still too noisy, a faster lens would help to lower my iso settings.
exp. 1/320
f/4.5
iso 800
I used my hvl- flash.

can anybody tell me what I'm doing wrong, or how I can improve.

Well, honestly, at this resolution, I don't notice the noise. Would you just be using the photos on the internet, i.e. facebook and such? If so then this, in my opinion, is acceptable noise.

However, if you want to improve, a faster lens would indeed help you. An external powerful flash would also help - it'll give you sharper pictures at lower shutter speeds.

Of course, there is also upgrading the body that has a better signal to noise raito... basically, you can bump higher quality bodies up to higher ISO's with less noticeable noise. Lots of options, hope you find the best that suits you :)

just a sugestion try getting close and have all the players facing the camera i find that noise is forgivable if the subject is interesting. (ie. iI want to see faces and emotion) it is hard but well worth it
