The Hyundai National Surfing Championships were held in Gisborne while I was back. Went down (only had 30min) to watch for a while and take some shots.

Nice shots, I found my 200mm lens does not have the reach for surfing and trash most of my shots,

I took around 150 shots and there were only a handful of keepers.

I like the last shot the most. I've found that even 300mm isn't enough for shooting from the beach. Recently got the Sigma 150-500 and I'm very pleased. If I could afford a 600mm f/4 I'd get one, but the children wouldn't get fed.

There's the other approach - get in the water. However, this is also not cheap if you want to use decent equipment. A good surf housing - no underwater housings don't take the pounding that surf camera housings do - ain't cheap. It seems that most 'in-the-water' photogs use wide and fast lenses to shoot surfers, again not cheap. Then there's the flippers, wetsuit etc as well.

So far, I like the idea of keeping me and my stuff relatively safe on the beach and snapping away. Plus, every now and again I can 'test' the zoom's colours on some bikini clad sunbather

Cheers Matt, there was a 600 f/4 there too but I'm a long way from getting anything like that. I have had a look at surf housings along with something like the tokina 10-17 fisheye or 11-16 f2.8.

I'm thinking if I do get a longer lens it would probaby be the 400 f/5.6. Got to rebuild the finances for this though.

Its odd how my friends always want to "test" my camera when a girl goes by
