Hi Paukl,

Love the effect. With an exposure time of 1/25th I'm guessing that you also apply a motion blur filter but I could well be wrong. Would you care to share any special problems or tips for taking such a shot?

Hi Bob,

The thing they're in is called (i think) a swing caroussell, it spins quite fast. I experimented a bit with the shutter speeds to begin and came out at 1/25 being the best trade-off between motion blur and visibility of the subject. I basically used the same "drag" technique you would use for the kind of shots where you photograph cars and blur the background.
Did that make sense?

Nice shot, The effect is quite unusual, if you look at normal 'panning' shots, you will notice the background blur to be nearly parallel to the horizon. But, in this case you can (without much observing eyes) see the blur to be making circular streaks (most probably centered at the focal point).

In theory this is possible by using a very wide angle lens. I think you have been using one. can you please disscus some details (if you like), like Lens and focal length used, subject distance, aprox angle thru which you rotated the camera during the complete shot.

Hey nice capture, the composotion is really good because your subjects are nicely centered. Plus they aren't fully sharp which reinforces the sense of speed. And on top of that I really like how the top of the caroussel has the sky as background and the rest is in front of the green trees.

@varunchauhan: The details of the shot are below the photo, I used my 17-40 lens zoomed all the way out to 17mm so you're right about the ultra-wide part. Judging from the length of the stripes and the fact that at 17mm the lens gives an angle of view of about 90 degrees, I'd say I moved about 4 to 5 degrees during the photo. I really just locked on to them apassing by, and kept following them as the shutter opened. I'm guessing 1/25 might be a sweet spot for fast moving objects though, I'm gonna try and do some more blurred shots at that speed. I think they were about 1,5 meters away from me at the time of shooting, and the centre column of the swing-ride would be about 4 meters away. I've also noticed that some of my other shots, shooting them when they were more to the side of the swing, didn't quite get the feeling of speed at 1/25. I think because you obviously pan a lot less when they are, from my point of view, at the side of the caroussell. Hope this is some use

It sure is, thanks a lot.
Although i can't go that wide on my crop frame unless i buy some exotic lens like the sigma 10-20. But i'll try to get a similar effect. I think the key here is the closeness to the subject.

but you can also get the same circular effect, I think, by just turning a good amount of degrees. And to do that at a reasonable shutter speed, you're probably right that closeness to the subject is the key. good luck!
