I'm looking into the 400D and need some help with a cheap lineup for that camera. I was thinking about 2-3 lenses where the cheap 50mm is one of them but I don't know what else to chose.

Which of the Canon lenses gives best quality/price ratio at low prices and which should I try to avoid? Is some of the old lenses a better buy than the new ones? I imagine that almost all Canon lenses are great but was thinking that some of them might be better than others when price is also a factor.

In another thread I discussed the merits of the EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM. Have you considered this lens?

Hi Rune, if you're after quality and good value, have you considered using fixed focal length lenses for all three?

That said, the challenge there is an affordable wide angle around the 18mm mark...

I you're into Canon plus love wide-angle, you must get the Canon 10-22mm. A dream-lens for those shots!

Thanks for your answers The 28-135mm with a 50mm sounds great, and I have now looked at a 28,50,135 combination that seems within reasonable price range. As I can see the cheap 50mm is better than the Minolta I have and if the other primes are relatively as good then that is a sweet lineup. It could be nice to see how all of the above performed in real life like how the colors and bokeh is.

If I should leave the a-mount it should be because new Sony lenses are about twice the price of Canon and I don't think they are any better.

Glad you like the look of the EF 28-135mm f3.5-5.6 IS USM lens. I was a bit worried it might be out of budget. In case you didn't spot the link one of the review sites has some sample pictures but they are a bit small for critical examination of the lens' performance.

Are any of your friend's current SLR lenses going to be used with the 400D?
