Can anyone tell me why it is that when Canon are running a campaign ie. their cashback offer that most of the Canon "e-tailers" have put up the price of their lenses.
I am looking to buy another EF-S 17-85mm IS USM to go on my partners 350D so as not to keep swapping and most of the e-tailers have bumped up the price of this item to around £450 - £490 so even with Canon's cash back will still come out at £350 - £390, when I bought my lens in the middle of April or there abouts I only paid £349 and that was with one of these e-tailers, if you ask me it's a B****Y rip off.

I wouldn't be too astonished, if your perception is right on target.
You can call it market forces - but I would just plainly call it marketing.
Perhaps Canon turns a blind eye to street prices, and from their point of view it is a real bargain. Bu they constructed it in a way that the dealers don't get anything out of it unless they adapt their prices so that the street price remains the same.
Lucky you bought for 350GBPs. No need to look back for you, then!
