Hi folks,

At some stage this thread should be locked and replaced with an official EOS M2 thread but for those interested in Canon's CSC line but who were disappointed with the "M" here's the M2:

The black camera is fitted with the EF-M18-55mm F3.5-5.6 IS STM while the white one has the EF-M22mm F2 STM. The Japanese press release is here or you can read it in Googlish here. The headline features appear to be:

  • Hybrid CMOS AF II [might focus up to 2.3x faster]
  • 18 mega pixel APS-C image sensor
  • DIGIC 5
  • 4.6 fps continuous shooting [one-shot AF, I believe]
  • Burst length: large fine JPEG 13, RAW 5.
  • ISO sensitivity up to ISO 12800 (ISO 25600 extended)
  • 8% smaller than the previous model
  • Vari-angle 3.0inch touch screen LCD display (1.04 million dot)
  • Wi-fi (IEEE 802.11a/b/g)
  • Movies: 1920 × 1080 (Full HD): 30p/25p/24p, 1280 × 720 (HD): 60p/50p, 640 × 480 (SD): 30p/25p
  • Dimensions: 104.9mm × 65.2mm × 31.6mm
  • Weight: 238g (Body only, excluding body cap)

More from the Canon Japan site:

    Image
Body size in comparison with the M

    Image
Major sections of the body made from magnesium

    Image
      Shutter motor assembly thickness reduced

    Image
    • Focus setting
    • Shutter release
    • Image playback
    • Two finger intuitive operation

I hope Canon have more success with this model but I can't help thinking that they also need to develop more native lenses to take advantage of the small size of the camera body.

Update: Gordon has started his preview of the M2 here. If his suspicion (as I write) that the M2 doesn't have the dual-pixel technology deployed in the EOS 70D is correct then that's a sad situation for Canon fans. On the other hand, as an Olympus owner... :P

Update 2: Another site is suggesting that the M2 won't be sold in either the European or US markets. I'll leave the implications of that for others to ponder.

Bob.
