Hello all from deep in the Midwest US. Been lurking here for sometime and finally decided to register. Anyway here is my question at the risk of being redundant. I am trying to decide between a Tamron/Sigma 17-50 or a canon 24-105L. I pretty much know the pros and cons of which the 38mm equivalent at 24 with my 60D is a con. However I rarely need a full wide angle, but sometimes you just need it. Purely optically speaking is the Canon going to be critically sharper than the other two mentioned? Oh I forgot to mention that cost is a factor. I can get a 24-105 local for $600 or so, the Sigma/Tamron more like $400 all used of course. The Canon 17-85 is just out of my price range, so think in that $600 or less range. Any help?

Hi Welcome aboard. What do you mean by 38mm eq at 24 with my 60D is a con?

Also the 17-85 should be much cheaper than the 24-105, the 15-85 potentially only slightly cheaper. I wouldn`t be concerned about lack of sharpness from the 17-50 or the 24-105 or the 15-85 or the 17-85.

Well a con only in that 38mm is not real wide. I am really leaning towards a Tamron/Sigma 17-50 or possibly the Sigma 17-70. Don't plan on ever going full frame, but the 24-105 is very alluring. Thanks

I believe he is referring to the 24mm being 38mm equivalent on the crop sensor. 38/24 = 1.6 aprox. I think what he wants is a wider lens on his crop-sensor 60D.

But the double reach of the 24-105mm is a pro ;) The 24-105mm is my most used lens and it was like that even before I had the 5D3. I just added the Sigma 12-24mm for the cases I needed a wider angle. AND: Both lenses are full frame compatible so I had no problems when I got my 5D.
