I have the canon 550D and shoot plenty of landscape shots at relatively wide angle but I am considering purchasing a 50mm lens f1.8 but then realized the 550 is cropped frame, so would a 35 mm be better ?

In my personal opinion, the 35mm would be better on a cropped body, but it also comes at a price, 50mm lenses are quite cheaper than 35mm.

Agreed. In the specific example of landscape photography, I'd definitely pick the 35mm over the 50mm.

I love my 35 f/2 on my 550D. Took some of my best mountain landscapes in Alaska with it

I agree that the wider 35mm is better for landscapes, compared with a 50mm. I would think most landscape shooters would actually want a lens wider than 35mm, on a cropped-frame camera, but different folks have different ideas about that.

The 10-22mm is a very nice lens! It is also much lighter in weight than its full-frame counterpart 16-35mmL, making me think I would rather tote a 7D with the 10-22mm than than a 5D Mark II or III with a 16-35mmL, so I plan to keep at least one 7D, indefinitely, just to use with the 10-22mm, which I have no plans to sell.

I considered the 10-22mm as well but the fixed 35mm gives that 50mm equivalent and may be a little sharper than the 10-22 ?

I use my 17-85mm at 17mm for most landscape work but I te d to. Find I am at the extremes most of the time. The 35 might give me that sharper mid range.... :?

bit the bullet and spent my hard earned cash on the 10-22mm. Managed to find it on sale here in NZ for $960 NZD delivered (this is about 490 quid or $790 US so a good deal i think ! and to top it off i also picked up the lens hood of ebay/trade me for under $20)

will buy the 35mm in a few months.

looking forward to seeing how good the 10-15mm range really is !!!
