So, I recently bought a used 5D Mark II and I'm loving it so far But the purchase has created some problems for me. As you can se from my sig I currently don't own any wide angle FF compatible lenses. Therefore I'm thinking of replacing the 10-22 with a 17-40/4L and the 17-55/2.8 with a 24-105/4L. Second hand prices are pretty much equal. The 24-105 is a little bit more expensive that the 17-55, but the UWAs are pretty equal. Since both L's are weathersealed just like the 5D2, I will at a relatively low cost get two weathersealed combos instead of a non-weather sealed lens on a semi- or non-weather sealed body (50D/600D). Of course the L's can be used on the cropped bodies as well. My collection will be much more flexible if I do this. Makes sense, right? What do you think?

Do you really need the lens sealing? Even then, the 5D2 isn't very sealed. I think comparable to the 50D.

My biggest thought is, what do you plan to do? Rather than move what you already do on crop to full frame, why not look at making the most of the full frame sensor? The 70-200 or 85/1.8 on that will give you something beyond crop sensors, keeping the crop and existing lenses as a second setup used in parallel, assuming you don't mind a two body setup.

I see the weather sealing as more of a bonus, even if it didn't come through like that. What what do I plan to do? Not completely sure tbh.

Here's my original thoughts:

5D2: A camera which will always be with me, for general photography and video, and of course for the stuff only full frame can do. Then I would need wide angle coverage for it (at least the 24-105)
50D: Make it a "specialist" camera for action photography, I guess mostly used with the 70-200 and 100-400.
600D: Make it a "specialist" camera for tele video with the 1.6x crop and the 2.7x movie crop function on top of that (mostly coupled with the tele zooms)

If I don't get wide angle coverage for the 5D2 it will not become the general camera I wanted it to be. Then again, as you say, do I really need to move everything to full frame? I don't mind a two-body setup as I've gotten used to it with the 50D & 600D.

Difficult times I guess I should use more energy shooting and less energy wondering

I have the 10-22 + 24-105 combo for my crop camera and there are just some times where I feel I can't be bothered swapping lenses and a FF & 24-105 solution would be best.

I had been toying with moving to a 5DmkII (until the mkIII came out, I might have to wait for that). When I do move to FF I plan to use the 24-105 as my widest lens on FF and stitch two shots taken in portrait orientation if I need wider.

In summary - I would swap one lens at a time. Swap the 17-55 first for the 24-105 and see if it's wide enough and/or stitching works for you.

If you are keeping the crop bodies you could keep the 10-22.

I will be keeping the crop bodies, and I have actually started thinking about the solution you suggest, mirageii. Swap the 24-105 and keep the 10-22. I think that's what I will do

Sounds like a good plan to me. Especially the 24-105mm lens is great. Personally I guess I wouldn't get the 17-40mm. Of course it's pretty much wider but personally I even chose the Sigma 12-24mm solution, which is wider and fits better "in front" of the 24-105mm range and is still very wide on a crop frame camera


The 5D2 has a better weather sealing. Quote from the white paper ( http://www.learn.usa.canon.com/resource ... pers.shtml ) page 33:
"Internal gaskets and sealing materials are used extensively at the cameras’ buttons, tripod sockets, and surrounding the LCDs. As a result, the EOS 5D Mark II now has dust and water resistance that is almost equal to that of the EOS-1N—Canon’s top-of-the-line professional 35mm SLR for most of the 1990’s."
The 50D only has a sealed card and battery door.

I stand corrected on the 5D2 sealing. Still, compared to the 7D and 50D, it feels much more like the 50D. The comparison with the 1N is also something they did with the 7D is it not? Hmm... expect to see gratuitous photos of a wet 5D2 this weekend!

Yeah, the 7D has the (slightly?) better weather sealing and it really feels more solid - but it doesn't have that full frame sensor.

I know why I was waiting for the 5D3 and I'm not disappointed - better weather sealing, better viewfinder, better focus, faster, feeling more solid. I just need to save up some more money until I can finally afford it And I think I wouldn't buy it if I already had the 5D2, which is still a very nice camera used by many professionals.

The 24-105 is one of my favourite lenses. I think the image quality is really sharp with very good contrast. Definitely my favourite zoom lens and the one I would not do without. It has probably seen more use than any other lens that I have. I have not used the 17-40 but have read good things about it.

Thanks, guys. I've decided to get a 24-105 and keep the 10-22 for the time being. I'll pick up the L after easter and put the 17-55/2.8 up for sale
