There is a rumour that the new version of the 5D will be out in October. The Mark ll has been out for some years and is due for renewal, although the tsunami in Japan put many things on hold for a while.

Lets hope so but, thinking back to my 5D2 purchase when that came out, the chances are that price discounts won't be very deep until the New Year.

Bob.

Another possible pointer to an imminent replacement is that the Mark ll is now being discounted down to almost its lowest price ever.

http://www.camerapricebuster.co.uk/prod728.html

The Mark lll is thought to have quite a leap forward in improvements. Let's hope the price isn't also a leap forward! Although, for sure, any discounts are unlikely until next year.

Very interesting..

I bought my 5D mkII way back in December 2008 for the nice price of £2400, nearly three years to knock a grand off.

I see the price of the 5 has dropped to less than 1600 in the UK. I wonder if this is stock clearing and a sign of the mkiii ?

It would be unlikely that a mklll will appear before 2012 and most probably substantially in to that year. I am interested as I would like to get a full frame camera to compliment my 40D and be able to use the same lenses. As I am in no hurry I am prepared to wait for the mklll. It is just a bit frustrating to have to wait ...

@ Jiko. I'm really hoping the 5d mk 3 will be good in low light. I've been doing a lot of low light photography and am really feeling the effects of the 550d's average low light performance.

Improved low-light performance would be a very good thing to see in a successor to the 5D2, as much of my shooting is in the evening and night. (I will not call it the 5D3, because the rumors I am hearing do not involve the numeral "5" being part of the model name.) Regardless, I am not holding my breath, having elected to purchase a second 7D for my job, and fast L glass, which I have already done. Resources for the near future will be going toward a new camera for my wife. Her employer will now allow her to use personal cameras and lenses, and the camera must be a Nikon, per agency policy.

I will still follow the evolution of the 5D system, of course.

I would sacrifice MP count for a better sensor with more dynamic range and better ISO performance.

me too, DP, me too... I am stickin with my 7D...til something earth shaking happens in Canon~land. Not another earthquake, but some major upgrades..til then the good old 7D is my work horse.. Of course this is all to be expected from a not so hot chick, with a couple of cameras, who knows she is a photographer...I know what works for me..but wouldn't it be fun if they trotted out something spectacular?

EOSHD is currently running a list that hints very strongly at a release of the 5D mkIII. Not in the last place because Canon have recently released its DIGIC 5 processor in the S100.

I think it makes sense since movie use of the 5D mkII has been going strong, but that industry is seeing some very serious players like Red making innovative new cameras. Canon will have to respond more because of that than the developments of the regular photography competition of the 5D mkII.

The latest rumour is of an announcement on 2nd March:

http://www.canonrumors.com/category/pho ... -mark-iii/

That is only four days away. Clearly Canon are extremely good at keeping these things under wraps!
