What you have to realize is back when the initial rebel came out, (film, not digital) the internet was not a prevalent then. Different markets behave differently. The got milk commercials did well in the US, but failed when they moved it elsewhere. (I believe they mixed the translation up with got hemorrhoids or something.)
Also, depending on the region, the same word might have a different connotation. In the US, someone can go by a nickname of Randy and no one thinks anything about it. In the UK, Randy has a... different implication.
Because of this, they started different brand names for their cameras in order to try to attract the most possible people. However, in today's market, it is easy to figure out that the same camera is branded differently in different regions, and it may seem to be a waste of time now, but they have also built up a brand in the various markets. People know a Rebel belongs to Canon. They may not know what a 600D is. They may even think it is a Nikon due to Nikon always using numbers with the letter 'D'.
And recall, Canon is a Japanese country. They refer to this camera as a Kiss X5. So if you wanted to be really proper, you should probably refer to it as a Kiss X5. Personally, I prefer T3i or 600D. I plan to refer to the camera by whatever is on the sticker.
