Does anyone own this lens? It doesn't appear to be in the lens gallery.

Mine'll be in my hands tomorrow :) But yea, I had noticed it wasn't in the gallery although I'm sure there are a few lenses floating around with members here :)

Yes. This is a current-production lens, and listed on the canonusa.com site.

What is the lens gallery?

It's one of our forum's sections.

Ah, OK, thanks; I had looked here in the Canon section, and on the main Cameralabs page, before posting that reply. I forgot about the Lens Gallery section, even though I had browsed that section in the past.

My 35L is one of my best lenses; perhaps THE best one. My 35L and 100L are my main working lenses.

I have not yet attained the level of computer skill needed to get my camera images on-line.

I would like an L prime for my cropped body.

Can anyone post any pictures from it?

I have the Sigma 30mm f1.4 and love the images I've had from it on my 550D body despite the fact it was front focusing!!

The canon lens was one of the lenses on my short list but I didn't get to look at one as the don't seem to be available in these 'ere parts :-(

There is an image thread for the sigma lens that will give you a good indication of the kind of images this focal length and f stop can achieve

I just pulled mine out of the box this afternoon but I think it's instantly become my favourite focal length, on FF anyway. I had rented the 16-35/2.8L zoom last summer for a wedding on my 7D and the 35mm end was... boring. Not wide enough to be "interesting", but not long enough either on the 1.6 crop. The wedding I was shooting was... not as inspiring as I was hoping for though, so your mileage may vary :)

If I have time this coming weekend I'll try to grab some shots to put up online as the weather is (currently) looking like it might want to cooperate for a day outdoors.

I have a 35mm lens on an analog camera and I always think "oh damned, this lens is too wide" - but as soon as I need a wise angle, I think something like "oh damned, this lens isn't wide enough".
That means: I should go for a 85mm and a 24mm lens on a full frame body. Or: The 24-105mm missing the wide aperture.

I didn't have much to shoot, so I just threw together a few shots. First off, 35L close-up to show shallow depth of field. Notice the CA with the wider apertures around the edges of the lettering. I noticed in LR4 this is drastically reduced, but these images were processed with LR3.6:

f/1.4

f/2

Image
f/2.8

Image
f/4

Next, an example of field of view differences. The background looks slightly farther away in the 35L shot despite being ever-so-slightly tighter than the 5D+50 combo. Both shots are at ISO 800 and f/2.8

Image
7D and 35 f/1.4L

5D Mark II and 50 f/1.8 II

If you head to my Flickr, there are a few shots on the 5D with the 35L taking both closeups and action shots.

I have it with my 5D mark II. A great lens. Versatile for the photography.
