what is the best all around travel lens? Which is The Best Travel Lens ?

I see you have the 18-55 lens which was presumably the kit lens with the camera. That is fine for general city shooting. I would use it at about 30mm setting to avoid barrel distortion. If you want to shoot close-ups of far away features then you will need a telephoto lens. I am not familiar with Canon lenses because I use Nikon gear but I think Canon do a 55-200 or similar. You could get an 18-200 if you don't want to change lenses in open air conditions. Good luck!

I know a little about a lot, a lot about little and everything about nothing.

How do you define "best"? There are lots of different qualities that can make one lens "better" than another.

The Canon 18-200mm offers great convenience but at the cost of low image quality and noticeable barrel distortion though the latter can be corrected with some PP.

A 50mm prime can offer plenty of bokeh with its 1.8 or larger aperture if you're shooting people or a person in a city centre but its fixed focal length can pose problems if you can't physically get far enough from the subject to frame it fully/close enough to catch a desired amount of detail.

I used all four of my lenses for a tour of London - they all had their uses and did things the others couldn't.

Im terms of flexibility the Tamron 18-270mm might be the best lens. My brother has one on his Nikon D90 and his pictures look pretty nice.

For travel I use the 18 to 135 kit lens that came with my 550D earlier in the year. Its got a reasonable wide angle, an ok zoom and the images are not bad. Its certainly a better lens than I am a photographer

But at the since the beginning of DECEMBERFEST I have been using JUST my Sigma 30mm f1.4 lens for a wide range of different photography and I'm really really loving it.

I don’t know if it’s the best one for travel, but I’ve used the EF 24-105 f4 L in my travels with little need to change the lens in an urban landscape. It has great Image quality and it’s weather sealed. I don’t know about your budget, it’s not a cheap lens, but it’s a solid investment, it’s usable if you will upgrade in the future to a full frame body and the build quality is excellent. You cannot find a best lens for travel if you do not make some compromise. You may cut off the image quality and max aperture and have a lens with a big zoom range like the 18-200, or opt for a better image quality and less zoom range. In my travels I’ve used the 24-105 in daytime and at night I’ve switched to the 50mm 1:4.

My first zoom lens, other than the 18-55mm kit zoom, was an 18-200mm Tamron, based on my wife really liking her agency's Nikon-fit Tamron 18-200. When I later bought my first 7D, which was packaged with an EF 28-135mm IS, I found that the Canon hunted (for focus) less in low light, and with less zoom range, had less distortion at each end of the range. Of the two, the Canon 28-135 would certainly be my preference for walking about in a city.

I later acquired the excellent 10-22mm EF-S, which complements the 28-135mm very well. If I did not want to swap lenses in the open air, I could be happy with either one, though, of course, the 10-22mm zooms from ultra-wide- to wide-angle. whether this is a handicap, or not, depends upon the environment, and one's plans for the day. Some cities are more densely constructed and vegetated than others.

One lens that I briefly used, while evaluating a camera for purchase at a large photography dealer, was an 18-135mm EF-S. I was quite impressed by its focusing ability and images, and wished I could have afforded to buy it along with the camera. Sometimes, indoors, my 28-135mm is not quite wide enough.

I have only mentioned specific budget zooms, because that is the limit of my actual zoom lens experience. I am acquainted with local event photographers who really like their 24-70mm 2.8 EF lenses, as working lenses on their full-frame pro Canons. I am not sure what they would choose as a travel lens.
