I own a 1000d but have seen a 1dmk2 for a reasonable price is this a step backwards as the 1d is 8.2 mp (i think) everything else seems good fps being the main one , but as it`s a full frame how will it diifer from my 1000d?

The 1D2 is not a full frame camera.
It's a APS-H sized camera.


The difference is field of view.
Full frame is 1.
APS-H is 1.3.
APS-C is 1.6. (The crop factor for your 1000D)

What this means is that while the 1D2 will give you a bigger field of view, you will still not be as wide as a Full Frame, nor could you use any EF-S lens as those are designed for use on most APS-C sensors.

If you want to know if it would be a better fit for you, then you will have to figure out what you want in a camera body, then compare what you have to what the 1D2 has. After that, you will have to decide if the difference is worth the price that you will pay for it.

You can't rely on the pixel count to tell you how good the image will be. The 1000D has a couple more MP but that's could an advantage worth having only if you are planning on doing large prints.

I haven't the 1D MK II but I'd imagine its noise management would be better than the 1000D despite being older but I admit I could be wrong on that.

The FPS rate is important for those shooting sporting events and moving wildlife, plus other endeavors with which I am not familiar. Noise management, as mentioned by Rorschach, is an important consideration when looking into purchasing an older digital camera. In general, this is why some older pro-level cameras are very attractively priced. (I am not saying this is necessarily true in this particular case.) This factor has caused me to hesitate buying a couple of older pro cameras, and instead I bought a second 7D, which was pre-owned. (Cropped-frame sensors are entirely adequate for my occupational use.)

Thanks for taking the time to reply everyone, that`s the problem i`m having i like my 1000d but the other considerations have to be looked at also, it looks a better camera but is older and i don`t know what life there would be left in the 1d and cost to sort it should a problem arise.

Do you have EF lenses actually? You have to change your EF-s lenses into EFs if you want to go APC-H.

Second: Where does your current 1000D perform poorly for you?
---Where have you lost pictures because of X?
Third: Where has it performed well for you?
---I end up always bringing my camera with me for X....
Forth: What type of pictures do you enjoy taking?
---E.G. I love taking pictures of my Dog/Boat/Rain

I own 2 lens`s at the moment a nifty fifty and a tamron 70-300 (don`t laugh) but a canon 400mm f5.6 L is in the pipeline for early next year.
There are times when poor light means i can`t get the shots i want, i appreciate the lens has a lot to do with this.
It`s been ok in good light and with the cheap tamron lens.
It`s more a case for the future as i plan on wild life photography as i recently got an ameristep hide.

Did I just read about someone saying that you must have EF-S (cropped frame) lenses to use on an APS-H? Does it not take full frame lenses (EF)?

I can never decide which lenses to get, what's worth the money, nor how to run my flashes.

Just the opposite.
APS-H (1D series) cannot use crop frame lenses such as EF-S. They can only use full frame (EF) lenses, even though they have a 1.3 crop factor.

What this means is that no matter what lens you use, you will never be able to use it as wide as it was designed for on a full frame, nor take advantage of any EF-S lens that you might desire or have.

There has been exactly 1 lens that has been designed for APS-H use; the EF 8-15mm f4L Fisheye USM. This lens has a switch to convert the effects from Full Frame, to APS-H or APS-C. Kind of interesting how they released this lens, the first and only one to be designed for use on APS-H cameras, not too long before they discontinued production of APS-H based cameras.
