Canon's announcements are becoming a joke even when they do happen. Think of the lenses announced over the last year or so which then got delayed. It seems even the relatively low volume EOS 1D X is a struggle for Canon to produce on time as there are now rumours that it too is being delayed until April.

Strictly speaking are they really late? As in, have Canon previously given a ship date which they have pushed back? In the case of the 1D X, 99.99%+ of us wont be buying one and I'm sure Canon are managing those who are seriously looking at it accordingly. Same goes for the super-teles.

I think the bigger objection most people have is that new lenses are popping out about double the price of the ones they're replacing. But for us in the West we're screwed economically so that isn't going to change any time soon. Remember just a few years ago the exchange rates were far more favourable.

Im of the view that people are upset that Canon has not released a date because Nikon has already released their own version already. I believe ever since the late 90's Canon and Nikon has been entagled in a constant release war.

I for one believe that Canon should really focus more on their lens releases since this was the one thing Canon differentiated itself from Nikon for almost 2 decades. In fact Nikkor Glass, although fantastic, is still slightly behind in tems of generational technology. Canon is still making releases of lens tech that Nikon takes on a few years later. Im just curious as to what Canon will be doing later.

As for the Camera Bodies, I still support the FF systems more than their APS-H system, and I hope they can push it further as Nikon seems to be leaping ahead in this area - Although their semi pro releases like the D7000 have been horrible though - since they are neglecting buffer size and processing power for attempts to 1up Canon in speed AF and FPS.

If they can release a 5Dmk3 with a AF thats better than the 7D, a speed thats more than 7, and a dual card slot, Im going to be happy to continue supporting Canon.

Hi popo,

It would certainly be remiss of me not to acknowledge both the earthquake/tsunami in Japan and the floods in Thailand. I can't remember what the precise impact on Canon factories was but the power shortages in Japan must certainly have been a factor. However development of the EF 200‐400mm f/4L IS Extender l.4x was revealed a year ago and the EF 500mm f/4L IS II and EF 600mm f/4L IS II were revealed in August 2010 according to Rob Galbraith. Last May those two primes were promised for shipment in 2011 and today we learn that they won't ship until May 2012. That's nearly two years!!!

Yes, the 1D X and the aforementioned lenses live in rarefied territory and few of us, myself included, expect to own them but I think there's a very unwelcome pattern occurring. If there is a product announcement either today or on Friday I guess we just have to hope that something actually ships this side of the summer.

I am still thoroughly enjoying my 40D, 7D, 7D, and 5D! I just bought the 5D at the end of 2011. A new 135L lens has added to the pleasure. Life is good!

I could have purchased a 5D2, but by instead purchasing a 5D, I had some $ available to acquire a pristine pre-owned 400mm 5.6L a short time later. The decision to acquire the 5D was not based on finances, anyway, but because I had done some pixel-peeping on-line and wanted to try an original 5D, while I had an opportunity to acquire a really clean, gently-used one.

I can wait indefinitely for a successor to the 5D2, or perhaps I might just save for a 1DX sometime in 2014 or 2015. Good lenses are really so much more important than the camera.

Hi folks,

There's either a very elaborate hoax going on or Canon will make an announcement on Friday March 2nd.

Relying solely on an ever unreliable memory I thought that Canon tended to announce cameras and the like on a Tuesday but maybe the timing has something to do with the 25th anniversary of the EOS system?

The expectation is that it will be the EOS 5D Mark III. The rumoured specifications seem to have settled down (22mp, 61pt AF, 100% VF, 3.2″ LCD, Dual CF/SD Card Slots, US$3500) but we don't have long to wait to find out if they are correct or what other goodies the 5D3 will offer. If it is announced...

Bob.

Over on Canonrumors they have a link to photos showing what appears to be a large Canon stage being set up somewhere in China. Would be a lot of effort for a low end camera launch!

dont think that the 5DIII will be 22mpix... thats kinda low compared to D800

My guess since 2010 is 38Mpix

22MP > 36MP IMO.

Can't wait to hear about the official deal with the MkIII... If it's the specs that have come up on Canon Rumours then it is *the* camera that I'd want. Grip-able when necessary, ergonomics of the 7D, and a very respectable frame rate. I haven't had gear lust in a while, but... yea...

I believe the rumour of a "lower" MP model coming first, actually I think if they're going to do this, they could have recycled the 18MP of the 1D X to save on manufacturing management.

But there are different tools for different needs. 22MP means (to me) the only significant update is the AF, but that's not worth double the price for. 36MP+ and I'd be 1st in line.

Hmm.
  • What was the first EOS camera called?
  • When was it introduced?
  • What is the current European xxxD model called?
  • What (else) might Canon announce?
Answers:
  • EOS 650
  • March 1987 (25 years ago)
  • EOS 600D (March 2011)
  • Your guess is as good as mine!
Bob.

P.S. On a personal note I'm not tempted by either a 5D3 or any other DSLR. If Canon don't announce a CSC, either now or at Photokina, I'm moving on.

I know it's completely off-topic, Bob, but...What will you get then ? The NEX-7 with the 24mm f/1.8 Carl Zeiss or so :) ?

Hi Joris,

Totally off-topic so I'll tick myself off in advance. I'd still prefer a high end Canon CSC to make occasional use of my EF glass. As an aside CSCs now outsell DSLRs in Japan, account for 30% of sales in the UK but just a paltry 20% of sales in the USA (source). Canon will be particularly stupid if they ignore this market much longer!

Failing a high end Canon CSC then maybe a NEX-7 with a Voigtländer 12mm f/5.6 Heliar subbing for a native ultra-wide - check out Ken's NEX-7 review. The X-Pro1 would have to have exceptional IQ to make up for it's size and initial lack of glass. The elephant in the room is Leica's promised "mirrorless". It's actually quite an interesting time to be shopping and I'm prepared to wait up to a year if necessary!

Bob.

Hi folks,

Canon Rumors has now posted the following 5D Mark III specifications. This thread will get locked tomorrow when an "official thread" will no doubt be created but, if the rumour is right, here's a sneak preview:
    Unsurpassed Image Quality
  • 22.3 Megapixel Full Frame CMOS sensor
  • DiG!C 5+ Image Processor
  • ISO 100-25600 (expandable to L:50 H1:51200, H2: 102400)
  • Full HD Movie (ISO 100-12800 (H:25600)

    High Performance Operation
  • 61-point high-density reticular AF (up to 41 crosstype points)
  • 6.0 fps for high continuous shooting
  • Intelligent viewfinder with approx. 100% coverage
  • 3.2-type, approx.1.04m dot (3:2 wide) Clear View LCD II
  • iFCL metering with 63-zone dual-layer sensor
  • Shutter durability of 150,000 cycles

    High end features
  • Silent & low vibration modes
  • Dual card slots (CF & SD)
  • High Dynamic Range (HDR) Mode
  • Multiple Exposures
  • Comparative Playback function
  • Improved durability & water and dust resistance

    SPECIFICATIONS
  • Available Colours – Black
  • Megapixels – 22MP
  • Sensor Size – 36 x 24mm
  • ISO/Sensitivity – 100 – 25600
  • Autofocus Points – 61 points
  • Lens Mount – Canon
  • LCD Size – 3.2″
  • Liveview – Yes
  • Viewfinder – Optical TTL
  • Min Shutter Speed – 30 sec
  • Max Shutter Speed – 1/8000 sec
  • Continuous Shooting Speed – 6 fps
  • Self Timer – 10 sec, 2 sec
  • Metering – Centre-weighted, Spot, Evaluative, Partial
  • Video Resolution – Full HD 1080
  • Memory Type – Compact Flash
  • Connectivity – USB 2, HDMI, Mic Input, Wireless (optional)
  • Battery – LP-E6
  • Battery Type – Lithium-ion
  • Charger – Includes Li-Ion Charger
  • File Formats – AVI, RAW, H.264, MOV, MPEG-4
  • Dimensions – 152 x 116 x 76mm
  • Box Contents – Battery Pack LP-E6 .. Battery Charger LC-E6 .. AV Cable AVC-DC400ST .. Interface Cable IFC-200U .. Eyecup Eg .. Wide Strap EWEOS5DMKIII .. CR1616 Lithium Battery+
It looks like a solid follow on from the 5D2 but the only headline grabbing upgrade I can see it the burst rate (up to 6 fps from 3.9). I never had an issue with the "9-point AF + 6 Assist AF points" of the 5D2 but the "61-point high-density reticular AF (up to 41 crosstype points)" of the 5D3 also looks like a step up as does the new "iFCL metering with 63-zone dual-layer sensor".

Apparently the announcement event starts at 04:00 GMT on March 2nd (11 pm EST March 1st). A bit early in the morning for those of us in Europe so I'll look forward to lots of analysis when I log on to the forum tomorrow morning. Enjoy. 8)

Bob.

Looking forward to this!

Interesting to see if the talk of an in-camera-body flash transmitter will materialize or not.

Personally, the price is super high for my budget. But it is encouraging to think that the 5D2 will be closer to my reach!
