In my case I would be looking at a macro to suite my 5DII( 100mm 2.8L)
and a wide angle zoom. They would replace my EF-S 60mm macro and my Sigma 10-20mm. If I was to replace both lenses I would sell both of my other DSRs and just have the 5DII.

If you enjoy macro work, have you used any extension tubes or lens couplers with your current macro lens?

I've long enjoyed extension tubes for a macro effect.

However, I've found out recently that I like two lenses combined with a coupler to be easier to get the macro effect I want. My 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 DO IS USM with a 85mm f/1.8 USM attached to it produces some good results.

Either option loses infinity focusing, but this was a cheaper solution than buying a new lens and has been able to, mostly, fills the macro desire for me.

Though my problem is that while I enjoy my current setup, I keep wondering how having an actual macro lens would perform... especially when I combine it with extension tubes, a coupler, or both.

This is what makes the 100mm f/2.8 USM more tempting for me than the 100mm f/2.8L IS USM. The non-L takes a 58mm filter whereas the L takes a 67mm filter. The lens coupler I got was for 58mm. I have 4 lenses that take 58mm filters, 2 that take 77mm filters, and one with an 82mm filter. I've been trying to keep my filter sizes consistent to reduce the cost. It also reduces the number of polarizers or ND filters to purchase or haul around.

Interesting reason to chose the less expensive lens, but that is what makes the non-L more tempting for me. As I found out with the coupler, which cost less than the extension tubes I bought previously, that sometimes the less expensive option can be more fun.

Hey Dragon.
I've seen a Canon Pro Photographer, Jackie Ranken "worldofeos.com.au", do a similar thing with lenses "reversed" to gain a macro effect. Something I wouldn't have thought of doing. I didn't realize you could get an adapter to join two lenses together to create such effects.

With Canon's new rebates having both lenses I've been comparing, I may end up picking one up earlier than I intended.

I have the 15-85 - now I will start looking at L series lenses so I can start preparing for a full frame a decade from now and imo, it will be a good thing to do it now as it will upgrade my 7D and then I dont have to worryu about lens shopping again.

but I MIGHT get a nice 50mm prime for studio photography. Not sure which one to get though. I was thinking f1.4

Fisheye! I am developing a fever for a fisheye. The model is yet to be determined, and it may be third party or Nikkor. (I have a Novoflex EOSNIK adapter, and as my signature line indicates, own both Nikon and Canon cameras, so a Nikon-fit lens can serve double duty.)

A Canon 70-200mm 2.8 IS II is still on the short wish list, but even with the rebates, is still not within reach. I am still trying to budget for a Nikon SB-900 flashgun for my wife to use at work.

For the fisheye, if its for crop sensor I have to recommend the Samyang 8mm. Easily got in Nikon mount and no loss converting it to Canon by adapter since its fully manual anyway!

Yes, popo, the Samyang is being considered, though the Tokina 10-17mm has also been very well-regarded by reviewers, and local dealers exist. (All else being equal, I greatly prefer to buy lenses locally, from a dealer who allows me to try the lens before buying.) The new Canon fisheye zoom, which is suitable for cropped-sensors, though expensive, is also a candidate, though it would seriously delay affording a tele zoom, so I would like to keep an initial fisheye purchase under $1000 US; preferably several hundred less.

I just learned my nephew will be on the swim team. This moves the 135/2L up the leader board a bit. Of course, I do have my 100mm 2.8L Macro L with IS, and a Nikkor 180mm 2.8 if I elect to shoot film, so the fisheye may still occupy the top spot for now.

If I wanted a simple Prime lens and I was going to shoot in a studio, so theres lots of light and it was for a green screen, would you guys recomend the cheap and cheerful 50mm f1.8?

Keep in mind I have the 15-85 and I dont know if the 50mm would be a better studio lens at the focal length.
