 Post subject: Which normal Lens
PostPosted: Sat Dec 15, 2007 10:53 pm
Hi,

I thinking about getting a new everyday lens to replace the kit ones for my 400D, that offers quite good optical quality but without being too expensive. I don't really mind going without zoom or all i wanted is optical quality.

I;ve read many online reviews saying that the 50mm 1.8 is the first lens that everyone should get, but i worry that 50mm is too close for normal.

I found there's a canon 35mm F/2, does any have any experience of this lens? what do you think of it?

I read reviews, so people say its very sharp, however some online reviews say its not sharp enough as a prime

Im now stuck.. shall I get 35mm f2 as everyday lens or shall I just get the 18-55 IS which I heard is quite good.

Thanks

Hi jckng3, weclome to the Cameralabs forums!

So let me get this straight: from this second lens, you are only looking for better image quality?

If so, then a fixed focal length model should do the trick and will also be brighter than the kit lens, allowing you to work in darker conditions.

The 50mm f1.8 is a great budget choice, but tell us what focal length you use your zoom at the most. If you mostly use it at 55mm, then a 50mm f1.8 will be a great replacement. If you mostly use it at, 24mm, then you should be looking for something close to that.

The 35mm f2 is quite good and will be a good general-purpose option for your Canon 400D, but do also consider the Sigma 30mm f1.4 which is brighter.

Gordon
