Hi Aidan,

Personally I wouldn't get too hung up about the finer details of lens construction but I would certainly read all the reviews I could. After all, the lens performance is what matters. Gordon has done a number of reviews (check out the list here) and PhotoZone is another good source of information.

As for lenses under £200 here are some possibles:
    From Canon

  • EF-S 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 IS
  • EF-S 55-250mm f4-5.6 IS
  • EF 24-85mm f3.5-4.5 USM
  • EF 28mm f2.8
  • EF 28-105mm f3.5-4.5 USM II
  • EF 28-105mm f4-5.6 USM A
  • EF 35mm f2.0
  • EF 50mm f1.8 II
  • EF 50mm f1.4 USM
  • EF 50mm f2.5 Macro
  • EF 55-200mm f4.5-5.6 USM II
  • EF 75-300mm f4-5.6 USM III
  • EF 90-300mm f4.5-5.6 USM

    From Sigma
  • 18-50mm f/3.5-5.6 DC
  • 18-125mm f/3.5-5.6 DC
  • 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 DC
  • 24-60mm f/2.8 EX DG
  • 24-70mm f/3.5-5.6 ASPHERICAL HF
  • 28mm f/1.8 EX DG ASHPHERICAL MACRO
  • 28-70mm f/2.8 EX DG
  • 28-70mm f/2.8-4 DG ASPHERICAL
  • 28-105mm f/2.8-4 DG ASPHERICAL
  • 28-105mm f/3.8-5.6 UC III ASPHERICAL IF
  • 28-135mm f/3.8-5.6 ASPHERICAL IF MACRO
  • 28-200mm f/3.5-5.6 DG MACRO
  • 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 DG MACRO
  • Macro 50mm f/2.8 EX DG
  • 55-200mm f/4-5.6 DC
  • 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DG MACRO
  • 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO DG MACRO

    From Tamron
  • 28-80mm f3.5-5.6
  • 28-105mm f4-5.6
  • 28-200mm f3.8-5.6 XR Di ASP IF Macro
  • 28-300mm XR Di LD Aspherical Macro IF f3.5-6.3
  • 55-200mm F/4-5.6 Di ll LD MACRO
  • 70-300mm f4-5.6 Di LD Macro

    From Tokina
  • AF 193 19-35mm f3.5-4.5
  • AT-X 242 24-200mm f3.5-5.6 AF Wide Angle-Telephoto
  • AT-X 100 PRO D 100mm f/2.8 AF Telephoto Macro
This list is probably not complete and I have been totally strict with your £200 limit.

Bob.

EDIT: Some Tokina lenses added.

I own the EF 50mm f1.8 II and, like it's Nikkor counterpart, this lens probably represents some of the best optical value you can get due to its low price.

As for the rest, I have no experience with any of them. I listed them purely in answer to a question so you would need to do your own research, I'm afraid.

Bob.

Look up Gordon's reviews of Canon lenses.
If you cannot find your object of desire there head over here to continue.
