Been a little quiet lately, so I guess that means it is time for another question survey.

There has been a lot of speculation lately on which camera Canon will release next. So post what you think is next, and if you are feeling especially brave, when do you think it will be announced.

My thoughts, either a 5D III or we are not seeing anything till after the next Rebel T4i / 650D in February.

I think the 5d mk3 will be announced in February 2012 along with the 650d.

We're overdue a 1Ds series update. So let's say we get one of those this year. Note Canonrumors suggests the 1D line might be merged, so it wont necessarily be a 1Ds4 but could be a 1D5.

Can't think of anything else really... look at it sensor wise. Almost everything crop has the 18MP unit in it now. We're about due the next generation crop sensor. I'd suspect the MP growth might be modest, maybe even more conservative than the rumoured Sony 24MP, but improvements will be made in the video side. But which body will it go in first? I'd only guess the 7D2 will come before a 70D. Figure in some Olympic related selling of new models.

Ok, my guess is:
2H2011: 1Ds3 replacement
1H2012: 7D2, 5D3, 650D
2H2012: 70D
2013: 1200D

Good point popo, do not underestimate the power of the summer olympics for launching new pro bodies.

@popo I forgot about the 1d. A bit ironic since I read the article on Canon Rumors about 30 seconds before writing my predictions :D

I think you are probably right. I hope they merge the 1d line as it would allow a full frame camera with a high fps. I am not a big fan of the APS-H sensors so and am not sure why they ever bothered putting it in some of the 1d's.

I think Canon will not make APS-H sensors anymore, and I do think the 5D III will be announced before 2012 and the 7D II in 2012, but I have a gut feeling that their new sensors will be class leading and I can't wait;)

I would like to see a more potent 5D camera, with a better AF system & overall,a more pro camera in terms of features.
The 7D is already a lovely camera, any consistent upgrade will make it even better. (like upgrading the 2 processors) I would like for Canon to stay with their 18mpx sensor in the 7D. And I would like Canon to replace the door from the memory card slot,it feels really cheap & a bit loose, compared to the brick-quality built of the 7D overall. :)

Sounds pretty good. I'd just guess, the 7D2 is more to be expexted in 2H2012.

My thinking for putting the 7D2 earlier next year than later is so they can cash in on the Olympics... ok, it isn't a full on pro model, but they need something more affordable for the masses!

On Canonrumors there's a little fun about a 6D page appearing on one of the worldwide Canon sites. Content is same as for 5D2 though. Could Canon squeeze another camera into the lineup? The 6D could be the fabled 3D.

5D3 affordable FF high MP low speed
6D affordable FF or APS-H moderate MP higher speed (a 1D lite, or D700 like)
7D2 top end APS-C

A 3D/6D existing would help fill a gap left if they do merge the 1 series.

One reason why I see the 5DIII before a new 1Ds is that at this point, Canon might not want a camera to be close to achieving what their replacement 1Ds can do. They have waited this long for a replacement, why not wait a little more. Get people to purchase the next 5D, then come out with a better 1Ds that will make people want to upgrade.

The argument usually goes the other way around though. If the 5D3 comes out first, people will get and use that at the cost of future 1Ds sales. If the 1Ds comes first, those that really want it will get it and not wait for a cheaper 5D3 to do a similar job.

Put another way: if you really need a 1Ds, or can't afford the 1Ds, then the decision is made already. The ones that may be influenced are those than can get and use either. You want them to buy more 1Ds models, so that has to come out first.

All the above assumes the 5D3 and 1Ds replacement will have similar or same sensors.

I'd love a 6D with an APS-H sensor between the 7D and the 5D.

Like three similar cameras, just different sensors and speeds.
For example:
5D: FF, 4 frames/sec
6D: APS-H, 5,5-6 frames/sec
7D: APS-C, 8 frames/sec

I'll say:

Q2 2012: 650D
Q2/early Q3 2012: 7D2, 5D3, 1Ds4
Q3 2012: 70D
2013: 1200D

I can't imagine Canon not wanting to cash in on the Olympics/Paralympics so the "semi-pro" and "pro" bodies would be out in time for them.

I suffer from technolust along with the rest of you, and would love to have the most advanced and most capable camera.

However, when I am honest with myself, I doubt that my images (the things I make with these marvellous toys) would be discernibly better if made on an APS-H or even a full frame sensor than they would be if made with my present APS-C.

Seriously, would any of us be able to tell from merely looking at the finished print or projected image, which kind of sensor it was made with? Maybe a computer analytical tools could detect signs, but what about the Mk1 eyeball which is, after all, the only useful target for our images?

If you're into shallow DoF, going to a bigger sensor can give a different image not possible with an APS-C sensor and any sane lens.

And another beauty of a bigger sensor - you can crop it more easily to be like a small sensor again. See it as additional un-zoom range for your lenses.
