I'm curious. What were you expecting? Magnesium alloy body? Weather sealing? 19 point AF module?

I basically just want a 50D + video. If the 550D added MFA and faster FPS (even 5 instead of 6.3 would have been good) in a larger body that fits my hands better, it would be perfect. I wish Canon would just tell us if there is going to be a 60D and what time frame. I could get by with the 550D, but I want a little more and definitly don't want to be holding my new 550D when the 60D announcement comes around.

Anyhow back to this camera, does anyone know if you can take full res stills while shooting video?

I don't think that this camera should be out/announced by now, it is still very early... since I just got myself a 5D mrk II and I think that this camera is quite similar to mine!!!!
Canon, please slow things DOWN!

I think you are still safe with your sweet gear. I posted this in another thread.

very similar except the 18mp and some new video features. $100 more expensive.

T1i still stands very good. I think T1i will be best seller in 2010 holiday season, then XSi will be cheapest.

Seems like Canon sticks to their winning formula. It won't make enthusiasts like us happy tho :(

Btw, Canon might introduce 60D later this year after 7D sales are slowing down. Rumor is in the air, again expect it to be evolutionary rather than revolutionary.

Doh...just got the T1i (well, a month ago now, but still...) Mostly I'm just envious of the manual movie mode controls and the external mic! Ugg.....oh well. Nothing to be done about that now I guess. 18mp seems excessive though. At 15.1 I fill an 8GB card with 320ish photos (shooting RAW). Don't even want to think how fast this thing will fill up cards. You can't even bother with less than an 8GB card if you shoot RAW, and anything less than 16 will fill up FAST.

You don't mention what aspect of the 50D you're after. If it's the build quality, that'll never reach the entry level models. If it's the image quality, the 550D should surpass it. Besides, this is the entry level model for Canon and it really delivers as an entry level camera.

Kind of annoying actually, this camera has manual control over stuff in movie mode. Can't they have a firmware upgrade for the 500D so we can do that too?

Sounds like a good deal, i'm still happy i got the 500D tho

the only interesting point as far as I'm concerned is the slightly redesigned body and supposedly better grip. I found the old XXXDs horribly uncomfortable.

the rest was to be expected.. nothing groundbreaking but pretty solid stuff (though I can't see the point of 18MP at this pricepoint, where everyone will be running around with lenses like the 18-55 or 18-200mm and thus not make any use of the resolution anyway).

same ergonomic here, the grip is also very similar, they just add the exposure compensation/AV button

Well its not IQ as my 350D does fine here, when it actually gets the focus right. The build quality is nice in the 50d, but I could get by with out a magnesium body. The 50D just feels good in my hands. I mentioned MFA and faster FPS, but also the ability to track AF in sports settings. According to the-digital-picture's review, the 50D does a much better job of AF tracking in sports than the 500D and I really think that will come in handy as my children get older.

You are so right there. However, I was wishfully holding out hope that the T2 would be the big brother to the T1 and not a replacement. Obviously to me now its more of a replacement.

Hi everyone, we've just posted our preview / news analysis which compares the features and prices against some key rivals - I hope you find it interesting...

It'll be interesting to see how much T1i and XSi prices drop between now and whenever the T2i is released. For me, if the prices drop $100 or more, I'll go with the older model; and if prices drop $50 or less, I'll go with the T2i. Which probably means prices will drop $50-100 and I'll have some thinking to do...

Mark

P.S. Still not crazy about the 4GB video file size limit, tho.
