Does anyone know anything about availability and quality of this lens? I can see it mentioned here and there but did not find any reviews.

According to Park Cameras it was supposed to have been available in the UK last month. I don't imagine we will see any proper reviews until the lens is actually on sale, hopefully before Christmas!

I can see prices on that lens are about EUR 340,00 and availability for late November, both in Portugal and in France.

Kind of a fair price, for a zoom that is of that focal range, that has stabilisation, wouldn't you say?

Ooops: Portugal and France are "rip-off" countries then! It's only 260€ in Germany (incl. 19% you-know-VAT) and there are many shops listed, but none with an expected release-date

Found one retailer here in Oz showing price AUD359 (EUR227) but it's not available yet. Wonder if it can be any good at this price?

I'm looking forward to seeing some reviews of this lens. The price seems right.

It's very telling that Canon is coming out with so many EF-S lenses. Once and a while I hear talk about how long the EF-S mount will be around. I'm guessing that it's going to be here for a while with the range of gear Canon is building up. What's the list like now?

Hi Steve,

Here's your EF-S lens list but with the aperture etc. included and my own very personal opinions added:

• EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM - gives cropped sensor owners a decent wide-angle lens albeit with significant vignetting wide open
  
• EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM - probably the nearest that EF-S lenses get to an "L" model but also suffers from vignetting wide open
  
• EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM - decent but not great upgrade to the kit lens
  
• EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS - the kit lens in Europe
  
• EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM - a very nice macro lens for cropped sensors
  
• EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS - no tests yet but has a micro motor AF system

I have left out the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 as the IS version effectively supersedes it.

Despite owning a cropped sensor Canon camera this list really doesn't bowl me over. The 10-22mm is the only Canon choice if you need significant wide-angle zoom capability on a cropped sensor so they really had to offer it. The 17-55mm f/2.8 is a decent alternative for, and similar in price to, the EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM; which you choose depends on the value you attach to 17mm and f/2.8 compared to 105mm and f/4. As for the kit lenses, well, kit lenses are kit lenses - 'nuff said. The 60mm macro is good to have - tick, vg. As for the 55-250mm telephoto zoom, optically it may be wonderful (we'll have to wait and see) but the fact that Canon can't even see it's way to including a USM focus motor astonishes me. Hardly a ringing endorsement of its commitment to high end lenses for cropped sensor bodies.

OK - I admit it. I have been a little naughty and provocative ( ) but only to try and demonstrate that Canon is not really showing much sign of shifting its focus ( - sorry) away from EF glass. That doesn't mean I believe that the 40D replacement will have an APS-H sensor (1.3x FOVCF), exciting as that would be, but maybe Canon are keeping their options open for the next decade.
