I'm considering a 7d (or a 60d) and have been reading about this upgrade with interest. However I'm a little confused with a comment I read about the prices dropping on the 7d. Assuming the firmware is available free - it is isn't it? then why would the price drop its not like its a new model release that makes the current one less attractive.

Have I missed something here - or is this nothing to do with the firmware upgrade but the rumoured new model in September - but surely the firmware change means that's not likely. Or is it simply to counter the release of the 650d but I'd be surprised that would be of interest to anyone considering the 7d - :?

In the long term, if there are no other factors acting more strongly, then prices will tend to drop over time. Prices tend to be highest at launch, dropping throughout its lifetime hitting its lowest before its replacement comes out.

Except for the 5Dmk2 which bucked the trend on that. The price rose sharply just before the 5Dmk3 was launched!

The 5D2 fitted the trend normally I think, bearing in mind we're looking at longer term trends. I got mine for £1460 months before the 5D3 announcement. Best price today is still £1510 so not really anything in it. It's not unusual for the price to rise again after the launch of the successor model, since production of the older model is reduced or ceased, causing a supply constraint for the remaining people who want the older model.

And don't forget, we DO have external factors affecting the local pricing. Global finance is still in turmoil and exchange rate pressure is ever present.

The 7D firmware v2 update is out now. I'll stick it on when I get home tonight, although I don't know when I might get to give it a deeper workout...

Updated to V2.0, no issues so far!
Only had to change the date/time as it reset itself.
Also if you use the Canon EOS Utility you will have to update that to V.11 as the older versions don't work with new firmware.

Haven't tried any of the new functions such as 'In Camera RAW Editing' yet but it does look promising.

Is it ok now?

Not come to life yet, maxjj. I fear it may be terminal :-(
As well as the normal swirling moisture from the falls, the heavens opened up and there was a turbulent wind which made the lightweight poncho worse than useless. Now to wrestle with the travel insurance company.

Canon have provided a quote for the repair of my water-damaged 7D ... it includes
Cover Assy, Top for EOS 7D
DC/DC PCB for EOS 7D
Main PCB for EOS 7D
Bottom PCB Assy for EOS 7D
Labour (2 hours)

I guess another week or so and I shall have my 7D back .

In my opinion, they could have provided a new body for less than this will cost. The insurance company has agreed to pay.

Got my camera back from Canon New Zealand, and was at first impressed that they had not only fixed the electronic issues, they had also upgraded the firmware.
So I put one of my three SanDisk Extreme Pro cards in and it said "no card found" ... it said the same for all three of them and a cheap 1GB card I have for camera clubnight exercises. They all work fine in my 5DII. I sent it back to Canon who say the camera is fine, and my card is suspect.

I have googled and found some discussions in another forum (that must be nameless) that suggests the new firmware may be the cause. Any insights into this?

Update: they backed away from the card, and revealed that an internal connector to the card socket was not seated properly. All fixed at last

Firmware Version V2.0.3 has been released.

Quote:
Firmware version 2.0.3 incorporates the following fixes.

1. Fixes a phenomenon in which the camera stops working when the auto power off setting takes effect.

2. Fixes a phenomenon in which the maximum number of images that can be captured in a burst may be less than the actual number displayed in the viewfinder.

3. Corrects some errors in the message displayed on the LCD screen when saving RAW images developed in the camera (these errors do not appear in the Japanese and Korean language displays).

The fixes listed above are corrections for the phenomena experienced with firmware version 2.0.0. These phenomena will not occur in firmware version 1.2.5 or before.

Updating the camera’s firmware to version 2.0.0 / 2.0.3 from version 1.2.5 or before, will incorporate many new functions into the camera. For the details of these new functions, please see the “Version 2.0.0 improvements” in the history of past firmware updates.
