I dont know what is the best option..should I go for one of the speedlite's for my rebel XT or is there any cheaper alternatives?
I DO want to be able to take it off-camera though and mount it on a bracket..I want to get as far away from the ugly on-camera flash look as possible! I am wanting to use it for indoors model shooting (Im not ready to go to strobes yet;) and outdoors fill light as the weather here is often overcast or less than optimal.
If I take it off-camera do I need to buy an additional syc cord? Any advice is appreciated!

Also what do you guys think of the Alien Bee Ring flash?

The midrange speedlite EX430 seems pretty good for most things.

As for ring flashes I've not looked at that particular model, but remember some just have LED's rather than proper flash tubes - so be sure to check that out!

Metz and Sigma make some decent entry-level flashes, but you must careful about the voltage rating or you'll fry the camera's circuits!
