T4 Cameras (Witney Branch) are having a trade fair at the Belfry Hotel Oxford on Sunday (14th) to which I am going and I am going to try and PX my EF 70- 300mm DO IS USM lens for a 70 - 200mm f4 L IS USM while I am there will probably loose quite a bit of money on it. The reason that I want rid is that I very rarely use the 300mm end of the lens and when I have used it the photos look a bit soft, most of the photos I take (Railways) are between 70 & 185mm in focal length... so what I am asking is this a good lens to get or not a reply from Bob would be nice as I see in his sig that he has this lens. Also while I am there will be taking a good look at the 40D and if the price is right (special deals on the day) might even come back with one of them as well then 'er indoors can have my 400D and she can give her 350D to her daughter.

Hi Roy,

I am sure you have read the Photozone review which states "the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4 USM L IS may well be the very best tele zoom on the market today".

I can't speak for the other lenses out there but I am delighted with mine. I am sure you will miss the compactness of the DO lens but the 70-200 is tack sharp. If, in future you miss that 300mm capability then remember that the 70-200 is fully compatible with the 1.4x extender (but not the 2x extender).

Oh, and it looks even better stuck in front of a 40D. 8)

Bob.

I've also used the 70-200mm f4 and it's an excellent lens...

Well, I went to the T4 Cameras Fair and Part Exchanged the 70-300mm DO Lens for the 70-200mm f4 L IS USM I got £480 for the DO lens the 70-200 was on sale for £699 so had to pay a difference of £219 and then with the cashback from canon £100 on this lens will have only cost me £119 so I am well pleased  ... what I am not so pleased about is that this fair started at 10.00 and I got there about 11.25 to find that they had sold out of 40D's and 5D's and they took 10 of each  ... ah well my own fault should have got out of bed a bit earlier

Hi Roy,

I just love that deal. The £100 cashback makes it really sweet. Shame about the 40D though. Oh well, there's always Christmas...

Well I went and done it...... managed to get the credit card unstuck from my wallet and went into Maidenhead this morning and purchased the 40D, supplied battery is charged and in, CF card is in, second battery is on charge so best I get off of here and have a quick scant through the manual to see how everything works.
P.S. if the smile on my face gets any wider... my ears are going to fall into my mouth

Congratulations on the new toy. I hope you get at least as much pleasure from owning a 40D as I have.

Bob.

Hi Roy,

Haven't heard from you for a couple of days now. How are you getting along with the 40D and the 70-200?

Bob.

Still fumbling around the Menus on the 40D at the moment (there is a lot more than on the 400D isn't there) but am going out with it sometime early this week so will let you know later.
