This statement was reportedly made by Alessandro Stanzani, Canon's (UK?) head of consumer imaging in response to questions about replacement models for the 400d/XTi and the 5D:
We still have four months to go until the end of the year, so who knows what's coming next?
Bob.

hi Bob, do you know when the 400D was introduced? What is the normal lifecycle of a DSLR in the market? New model/s introduced every year normally? I suppose that technology, specs and competition between the 2 big brands drives this anyway...

A quick check from the net.
400D was in August 2006
5D was in August 2005

So my guess a 5D replacement soon.

Not sure about the life-cycle but heard Canon traditional releases new products like Intel - every 18 months or so.

Hi Roland,

I believe the 400D was only announced in August of last year so, assuming an 18 month announcement cycle, it would seem a little early to expect a "450D" this side of Christmas. I imagine that Canon could easily add the APS-C sensor and DIGIC III from the new 40D if they wanted to rush something out but I have no idea whether that is likely.

As for the 5D, after two years it would seem ripe for a revamp but rumour is now placing a 5D MkII announcement for next Spring. I'm not sure that this model line is one that Canon would position to take advantage of the Christmas rush.

Maybe Alessandro Stanzani has a cheeky sense of humour and was just winding the reporter up. That wouldn't look too clever if expectations for a new camera hurt the Christmas sales figures though.

So perhaps there will be a major announcement. Whoops, I can feel another attack of Ouzelum Bird'itis coming on.

Despite the 5D being my dream camera I think I'll stick with my 40D order unless that lotto ticket comes up!

Bob.

guys, canon typically announces cameras around sept and feb with almost no exceptions. so, there'll be no more surprises until next feb. however, there are still a couple of weeks remaining in this cycle, where new announcements maybe made.

Hey Shahram, you can do Ouzelum Bird impressions too.

dude, unless you got interested in digital photography this season, you would be able to tell a distinct pattern. I review cameras, so give me a break. the comment is about Canon cameras only... S

Hi Shahram,

My under-developed sense of humour got the better of me. My previous post was a very poor attempt at a joke. Sorry.

It will be interesting to see what, if anything, Alessandro Stanzani meant.

Are you allowed to share any of your camera reviews in the User Review forum? It would be great if you can. 8)

Bob.

SHIVA's right that Canon tends to do a Spring and an Autumn collection launch every year (February and August this year), but it does smaller launches at other times - for example the S5 IS and SD 850 IS / Ixus 950 IS were launched in May this year...

Also, in terms of DSLRs it only seems to refresh every 18 months for the 400D / XTi and 40D lines. Look how long we had to wait for the 1Ds Mark III!

So it remins to be seen how often it'll refresh the 5D line. It's certainly got a lot more interesting now Nikon also has a 12mpixel full-frame body with much faster continuous shooting...

Yeah, Gordon! Would there not be this negligible price difference of 2100€ vs 4849€

Northlight Images 5D rumours page is reporting that at "a Jessops store in the UK ... someone was told that the 5D was 'discontinued'" and also that an "Australian (Perth) camera store is telling customers ... that they have 'reduced their stocks' of the 5D since they are expecting a replacement soon". Apparently prices for the 5D are also being further marked down in a number of countries.

Note that Jessops are still selling the 5D with kit lenses but seem to have stopped offering the body only. Most stores in the UK are still offering the 5D bodies.

To lend further balance, this rumour regarding Jessops previously surfaced a few months ago as well and no 5D replacement was announced. I spoke to a major Canon reseller employee today and while he confirmed they had no 5D bodies on back-order he was quick to point out that he was unaware of any policy not to order more 5D bodies should their stock become depleted.

Previous posts in this thread have suggested that Spring 2008 is the most likely time for a 5D MkII announcement. That would still seem to be favourite but the downward trend in 5D prices is certainly welcome for prospective purchasers who don't need more camera than the current model offers.

Bob.

I think Gordon does a fantastic job with his reviews on his site. But as for me, I am going to buy the G9 as soon as it becomes available. Although it doesn't have a 28mm, you can't have everything in a digicam. I think it's a stellar camera, based on me own experiences with the G7.

3" lcd, RAW and hopefully a faster focusing system is just what G7 needed... ;) S

Oh dear! I know the EOS 5D replacement announcement isn't expected until Spring '08 but Northlight Images is now reporting that a "dealer in Munich (one of the few with the 5D still in stock) says they expect the 5D replacement to be 'on the market' by November". The 5D is "In Stock" at a number of UK stores but I still have to wonder if my life just got a lot more complicated. :?

SHIVA, Good luck with the G9. I hope you will share your thoughts about it in a User Review in due course.

Bob.

A 5D Mark II in November? That'd be nice, but I'd be surprised.

Note I have been surprised in the past though!
