Hi Gordon and others, I'll be shooting mostly outdoors with the 30D for about a week out in Bonneville Salt Flats in Sept. I'll will not have access to an external flash. Granted the wide majority of my shots will be outdoors on the salt (providing a natural reflective screen) shooting bikes and personalities.

How good is the on board flash on the 30D? I think for the occasional use it should work fine. What do you guys think? TIA, :) S

Hi SHIVA, it's pretty much the same as the built-in flash on any DSLR, so if you've tried one before - or are able to - then you'll know what to expect. IE - they're handy for fill-ins at close range, but beyond a couple of meters, they become very weak...

And don't forget SHIVA: If you want the onboard-flash to reach double the distance, you have to crank up your ISO-setting 4x :!:
Most external flash-guns have guide-numbers that are 3x as strong as the built-in plus can zoom, and thus can reach much further.
