Let's assume that there is enough in the budget to buy a 40D. I posted a list of the 40D features here.

So, what would be your main reason for upgrading from your current Canon DSLR?

Should I upgrade to 40d - it would be to have the best of both worlds (at this point of time where money is critical)

* The Tamron 17-50mm F/2.8 XR Di-llD performs slightly better on the EOS mount than on the Nikkor - vignetting, distortion, CA values.

* I would prefer both the EF 75-300mm F4-5.6 USM IS and the EF-S 17-55 F/2.8 USM IS to Nikon lens equivalents.

* the D300 has no scene modes

* The waiting list for D300 may be very, very long and a desperate Canon may try to undercut on price, meaning bargain priced 30Ds now, and before long, 40Ds.

* Excessive demand for the D300 may mean Nikon lenses may be in short supply also, and expensive.

Hi Seemoss,

Thank you, an interesting post. The D300 seems like a wonderful camera but I guess there will be some disappointment over the price.

Bob.

Yes, the D300 price may prove prohibative to some, but on the other hand, the D300 is in some ways a cut price D2Xs, albeit a technological significant upgrade on the latter also.
I wish to ammend my earlier posting regarding EF 75-300mm len's desirability, compared to Nikon equivalents.
What I actually meant was the EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 USM IS model which is the newer and far superior model - both optically, and also this models more advanced dual mode image stabilizer.
I just got a little confused.

Firstly, thank you to those of you have voted. If you haven't voted yet and feel you would like to contribute then please take a moment to share your thoughts.

I have come across an excellent page showing sample images from the 40D at every ISO setting and with noise reduction on and off. The original page is at photo-cafe.jp but it is much more accessible by looking at the Googlish translation.

Scoop A hitherto unpublicised feature of the 40D has been revealed by the Googlish link referred to above. This camera has a Contraction Priority setting. Maybe it converts all the reds to green at traffic lights as you are rushing to hospital.

Bob.

DavidL , what these Nikon fans fail to realize is that the 20D and 30D were fantastic cameras. When it comes down to it, when both 40D and D300 come out, image quality will most likely be identical. Most people forget that cameras TAKE PICTURES, nothing more! I'm tired of everyone bad mouthing Canon. " Hey i'm a Nikon fan that is proud of having features that I will never use as long as I live". Give me a break. See, now I am bad mouthing a soon to be excellent camera because of its fans.

Having already put my money on a DSLR already before the EOS 40D's release, I can say I probably will not be getting it any time soon.
