Well, at least this is the (only) one that is (still) official in the Tamron catalog: AF 28-300mm F/3,5-6,3 XR Di LD Aspherical [IF] MACRO.
But I'd suspect that there may be older versions of this model...

Update!
There will be a stabilized version of this lens!
Tamron announced @ PMA 2007 their new VC (=vibration coompensation) system that they will integrate into their new version of the 28-300mm: http://www.tamron.com/news/35mm/28300vc.asp

Oh envy, if only its autofocus worked with the D40.. That lens covers the range I use most. I need something to save for other than the 18-200mm AF-s VR.

I was going to ask has anyone bought and tested this lense yet ..
But then found out that Tamron has not started shipping yet due to some technical problem on the VC mechanism
http://www.tamron.com/lenses/prod/28300_vc.asp
Guess I still need to wait ..

If the lens is designated "VC" (=vibration control), yes. Otherwise, no.

Does anybody have this lens? Can you tell me how fast it focuses? I'm thinking about buying it with a Canon 40D. I will be shooting action (track and field), so i think I would want something that focuses quickly.
