Hello all.

Well, I have been wanting to get a 500mm lens, and found this Tamron 200-500mm for only $799 USD new.
Has anybody used this lens before, or held it. Thr camera store here in town does not have this lens instock, and won't unless someone orders it, so I don't have any way of seeing it for myself.

P.S I also found a Sigma 170-500mm f/5-6.3 APO DG for $769 new

Nick

Hi Nick,

Have you seen the PhotoZone Tamron AF 200-500mm f/5-6.3 Di LD IF SP review? As Klaus tested it on a 350D/Rebel XT the results should be pretty relevant for your XTi.

Bob.

Thanks for the link Bob. I had not found the link, so I will check it out

I have one more question. Sigma or Tamron? if you had to pick one of the two; what one would you get?? and why??

Nick

,
Were you thinking of the Sigma 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6 EX DG APO OS? I'll be potentially very irritating now and say "neither" if you have any chance of affording the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM, also reviewed very positively by PhotoZone here. The only drawbacks with this lens, cost aside, that I can see are a push me/pull you zoom and an early generation IS. No signs, yet, that Canon are introducing a MkII so it should hold its value better than either of the third party offerings. Canon currently have a cash back offer on the lens here in Europe so maybe in a month or two the USA will follow suit. :?

The Tamron 200-500 was reviewed with high expectations based on the photozone review by me there.
Conclusion: I wouldn't buy it!
Unfortunately I didn't had a chance to review the Sigmas. The 80-400 is said to be quite good, but based on my experience with the Tamron 200-500mm I'm not so sure (about believing tests). If you look at Klaus Schroiff's review you'll see that the lens reviewed had come directly from Tamron. They certainly made sure that the lens was perfect...
