Just wondering if they are a good match for general walkabout and people shots? The more I read about this lens I tend to find that its more suited to full frame cameras and ones with better/quicker focusing.

Any input appreciated.

Great match. I prefer this lens to the Nikon equivalent for its smaller size to be honest.

Only thing you may miss is the wide angle

If you're not thinking of going full frame in the near future however, Id consider either a Nikon 17-55 or Sigma 17-50 OS both f2.8's still.

You're right, the Sigma is much smaller and lighter. But I'm not sure I would take it over Nikon's, their 24-70 is one of the greatest general purpose lenses ever made in my opinion. And I say this as a Canon fanboy.

Nikyd, as long as you don't want to do significantly wide-angle work, it will be a great match for your walk around and especially people shots with the 2.8 aperture. It may not compare to Nikon's gold-ringed work of art but it's still a very good lens. Can't beat it for the price if you ask me!

Well, bought it and not impressed with the sharpness at F2.8, tired it at 24 and 70mm and pictures weren't tack sharp. So its going back for a refund, I'd read stories about this problem and Sigma's quality control, maybe I got a bad one???

I tried several and put them back in the shops. Unfortunately as the D90 has not lens focus adjustment so if its a duffer ist a duffer.

IMO if you're buying a fast prime or a 'pro' f2.8 zoom, then you want that wide open aperture to be not only usable, but good. I saved up a little longer and went for the 24-70 in the end.
