Camera Labs

Well, basically I am looking for something to replace my 18-55 at the 20-80mm range, and from what I've read, these two seem to be pretty good quality lenses at an afforable price compared to what Canon offers in terms of quality (these seem to be in the middle of the standard and L series Canon lenses at these focal lengths)

Basically which is better overall, I will mainly use this lens for portrait work, possibly some landscape at the 28mm end, and also the bit of random nature photography, trees close up, rock formations and other crazy abstract stuff like that.

Well Photozone has a clear verdict: Buy the Sigma 24-70.
Goes wider, is sharper at f2.8 from 24-40mm.

Able to buy lenses as and when you like , though still a student !
As I understand it , Canon lenses are more expensive then the rest.
Bet you can't wait to be working huh !

Nikon D7000 and a bunch of Nikkors

Hey, I just found both dirt cheap, so they are not bought yet, and besides its all part of my Christmas from my mum, since I intend to spend Christmas Day doing family portraits, thats going to be one of my presents to the family, and the good excuse is that I need better equipment before then so I know how to use it before the time comes - ahh I love my mothers limited knowledge of anything I do lol - In all seriousness though, I won't get anything on Christmas day, which is fine by me, all I got last year was my computer, which I had watched being built on the 23rd and 24th, then on the 25th I took it to bits and re-built again the way I liked it - Best Christmas present so far!

I read the review Thomas, but the 24mm is just to expensive! I wasn't sure which one came second, on the cropped frames, but I was leaning towards the Sigma 28-75.

Got to agree with Thomas, had a quick look at all three online and the Sigma 24-70 looks the better bet albeit a bit more expensive.

Well yes, the Sigma has it's price but it's FF, should you ever ever have the dosh to go FF
But the Tmaron sure is no slouch and got some thumbs up from different German magazines: FM 07-2003 SUPER, CF 10-2003 TESTWINNER, European lens of the year 2003-2004 (EISA), CF 02-2004 Digital recommended, Computer Foto 04-2004 Testwinner
