Post subject: How can you tell?

We've heard of all of Sigma's QC problems, but I'd like to know, if I were to buy a Sigma lens over the counter, would there be any way for me to tell if the copy I'm checking out is a lemon (like a lot of Sigma's are)?

Thanks!

Unless there was an obvious exterior failing, the only way would be to try it. I think a lot of the cases are blown out of proportion though.
